2015 GMC Terrain just under 80K and transfer case needs replacement. Thankfully I purchased an extended warranty which is covering a used/aftermarket transfer case replacement and labor. Saves me over $3,000. No leaks just failed. Chunks of metal inside the fluid. This will give me another year to start looking for a vehicle. Staying away from GMC.

@suesol79 : stay away from AWD (if you can help it). I've said this before ... and I'll say it again ... I think AWD gets oversold to people who don't need it ... and if really don't need it, you're just adding complication to your vehicle that can fail and cost you thousands to repair.

Same issue. We have a 2013 Terrain 2.4L with 140,000kms and it was super icy out with the warm winter with lots of slippery ice, so the transfer case was being used more than normal. Need to find parts. Sucks as it’s right before Christmas, so can’t really get in to get an estimate until next week, then the waiting game to get the parts. I’ll update with the cost estimate when I get it. I’m thinking $5000 Canadian dollars if I’m blessed.

Transfer case is always being used. It's direct drive.

ANyone tried to report transfer case issues to GM? Mine is 2015 model fully packed Denali 6cyl. only 82,000km which is equivalent to 51,000miles. Driven only on flat highway road, nowhere enough stress been applied to this transfer case, yet blew up everything inside the case. Service on time at official workshop, minimum 2 visits a year!

Experienced same issue (2015 Terrain) with transfer case during end of 2020. It was a terrible time to have car problems because of the parts shortage which resulted from the Covid shutdown. During that time it took about 6 months to get a new part, GM paid for the rental & received a discount for the part. Luckily it blew while driving on the street & not the freeway. I filed a report with the NHTSA, this forum is informational but in order for a recall to occur, everyone must file a report so that the government is aware. I don’t know if dealerships or even GM keeps a log regarding car issues.

Also, I had about 70,000 miles, regular maintenance & no extended warranty. No mention of check for transfer case during scheduled maintenance. Never heard of it, but was told that it is on AWD vehicles. Dealership stated that a bolt broke loose inside & shattered the case.

I had one blow-up on my 2014 Equinox as I turned off the Interstate (100K miles). Got a reman one. This was January 2. I dropped it off at the mechanic yesterday because the reman one died. Called him a few minutes ago, and he said people are telling him the transmission destroys them. So, I'm potentially looking at a new transfer case (under warranty) and a new transmission (or at least a repaired transmission). I love my Equinox, but man, a horse and hay are starting to look good right now.

Have a great day. :)
Patrick.
