OK, I got an unprogrammed fob. I had it cut to fit but now I need to know how to program it. I could use a little help please :>)
I bought a spare fob / cut key for a family member's 2013 Equinox from the selling dealer about 1 1/2 years ago. The part was ordered using the vehicle's VIN and it was about $65.00 + tax.gbterrain said:I have been reading a lot of the posts regarding programming a key fob for a 2012 Terrain. Here is my deal. My wife's key broke off the cheap silver swivel holder on the key fob for my 2012 Terrain....the key is in tack but the cast swivel piece is missing a chunck. The actual fob still locks and unlocks the doors. The dealer won't replace it. They said I need to replace everything and the total replacement would be around $150.00 including programming. I also watched some Youtube videos and had the idea to buy a duplicate original used key and fob on ebay which I did. I then popped out the pin holding the used key from ebay and replaced it with my key. I used the my good original key as a master and tried programming the second key (ebay) by using the method of putting the master in and turning it on, shutting the vehicle off and then putting the "ebay" key in and turning it on. Well, the engine started (security lock light was illuminated) but as soon as I turned it off, it would not turn the truck on again...the master still works however. My question is, since the 2nd key is an original cut key, why does it not work. Do I need to program the ebay fob to make it recognize the key part or will this process reprogram the fob?
It is human nature - people do it all the time, myself included. Sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you. It's a crap shoot.1999 White C5 Coupe said:I often laugh how people buy cheap, aftermarket items for their expensive car from unknown sources on EBay and other on-line sites, instead of buying the part from the GM dealer. With the new cheap, aftermarket part - people often end up with problems and want others to fix it for them.
Good luck.
Thanks for the easy to follow instructions for the forum members.LILLYOF64 said:I just bought a 2012 Terrain and it only came with 1 key. So I bought a second key ( $60 and then $30 to cut it) then they wanted $143 to program it. I said NO THANK YOU. Frigging ripoff. I called the dealer who I bought my Terrain from and it took me less than 1 minute to program it. You know, thats over $8000 an hour to program a key for the amount of time it takes to program them...anyway..here it is, with only 1 key needed:
Insert your key, turn it on, but not the engine, wait 10 seconds. turn it off and remove.
Insert new key and turn it on, but do not turn on the engine, wait 10 seconds.
turn off and count to 5, then repeat the procedure with the new key twice more.
After the third time you count to 5, remove the key.
Reinsert key and turn the car on.
Worked good as gold for me, and I have a fully loaded Terrain, including remote start.
I just did this as the 2011 I just bought only came with one fob. Put the old key in, turn to the on position, but don't start the car. Wait for the security light to go off, then remove key. Insert new key and turn to the on position but don't start till the security light goes off. Turn ignition off, remove key and reinsert and it's all set.LILLYOF64 said:I just bought a 2012 Terrain and it only came with 1 key. Also no need to wait for the security light to go off. As soon as you turn it to run, turn it off and do the same with the new one. As soon as you hit the run position again, it's ready.Throttlejockey said:I just did this as the 2011 I just bought only came with one fob. No need to repeat the procedure multiple times.

Why not use your old key until it gets warmer ?Hi everyone,
Thanks in advance for your help, I really need it about now.
So here's the quick and dirty:
I live in MN and it's freakin cold out! Single digit highs during the day.
I have a 2014 Terrain and the remote start button broke. So I looked up the correct part number, which is printed on the inside of flip key. Based on the fob part number, I ordered two new fob's with blank keys. I then did some research and found out that I SHOULD be able to take the original key, put it on a new fob, reprogram the fob and everything should work peachy keen, new fob will work no problem!!
WRONG!!!
I have followed the owner's manual instructions about programming a new fob and now nothing. In addition because it's so cold, I'm afraid that I now have to make a call to AAA to have them come out and jump start my truck because I've let it be in the ON position for 30 minutes and run the **** battery down.
So my question now is, what the **** should I do?
Tow my truck to the dealer, have them cut one of the blank keys and pay to have both fob's programmed?
Sincerely stuck and extremely frustrated!
Did you also have the old fob with you so the car could read the chip?I did finally take the original switchblade key and put it on a new fob - went out to go to work this morning and nope, nothing. The electronics came on, but the engine wouldn't start.
note truethank you icebear you've been faster than me !
