Tons of MPG threads on the forum. Basically, you wont get great MPG but you will get good MPG for the size of the vehicle once it breaks in.
2011 Terrain,I just filled up yor the 3rd time.... The first tank full was 25 mpg and 24 on the 2nd & 3 fill up... Driving has been about 60% suburbs, 20% city 20% highway... This has been in winter driving with several snow storms...
Last tank of gas got me 25.7 mpg

222 miles on the tank
124 miles HWY
Around 20 miles of that is stop and go traffic
98 miles in town
15 City 22 highway  5300 miles on the clock and the lifetime average is 19 mpg :( 75% highway-25% city. Get the V6 the I4 on a awd is a gas hog.
I have the I4 FWD with 2700miles and got 30mpg on the highway in the winter. It definitely gets better as time goes on.

bballr4567, thanks for the link to Fuelly. Interesting reading there. What I don't understand is how to find the Terrain results on Fuelly without your link? The Terrain (and 'Nox) are not listed. Maybe the only results for the Terrain on Fuelly are your's?

For the OP, as bballr4567 said, there are a huge number of posts on this topic. Just search and you'll find many lengthy threads on the topic.

I think you need more data from him. How long was the trip, what speed did he drive at, and was it a calculated mpg, or from the DIC. And was it a one time 30 mpg, or since he owned the car. Not filling up consistently can affect mpg dramatically. I'm not saying that he didn't get a winter mpg of 30, but it seems to be a bit higher than most others are reporting. I can do about 27 mpg highway, which is about 25.5 calculated. That is driving 75 mph in the Winter - and with 8K miles on the car.
I filled the tank up before driving for the day. We had minimal town driving. We do not drive it very much. (I have a company car and don't have to pay for the gas and can use it for personal use) We get around 22 in town. When we first purchased ours, i was concerned like everyone else.
I actually have less than 800 miles on my 4 cylinder AWD so it's too soon for me to comment on gas mileage. But I've been averaging a low of 20.1 to a high of 20.7. I'm using Eco mode and I predominantly drive in suburb conditions with two 45 minute highway trips.
Best was 28.5 on the highway. Would like a long trip on a 55 mph road and no AC in warm weather and see. I have 4500 miles on the Nox now
Less than 1000 miles on my 2011 I4 AWD. All city driving with lots of hills in <30 F temps and I'm getting around 18 MPG calculated. (I thought that was pretty good just one off the estimated, but it seems most here aren't happy with anything below 20, it's better than my Escape got)
Bender, are you using Eco setting?

Yes
Me too; ok. Thanks.
Our LT has about 3500 miles on it now and the MPG is improving with each tank full.....the last tankful got 26.5 MPG with about 20% straight highway and the rest mixed. Haven't taken a complete highway only trip on a tankful, but I truly believe it will do 32 MPG, because on the last fill up, we drove to Atlanta and back (about 190 miles) and it was reading 29.7 MPG after returning home, so I think with a complete highway trip only, it will get the advertised 32 MPG, maybe even a little better. I am using the ECO mode.
We just finished a drive on the weekend from Vancouver BC to Grandmound WA 270miles each way.The average speed was 73mph less a hr wait at the boarder bumper to bumper traffic plus the same going south threw Seattle.
The 5 people in the Terrain added some weight with the ECO button we had a average of 9.1L per 100klm on the way south. Then 8.9L per 100klm on the way home, with a hour bumper to bumper north threw Seattle.
Not bad for the speed I thought. Also no cruise control due to traffic.

Now just over 7500klm on the speedo.
My best with the 4 cylinder was 30.4 on a 375 mile round trip (95% highway) and my worst was 22.9, mostly around town. The car has about 4000 miles on it, overall average is about 26 in mixed driving. I typically drive without eco. I'm certain I'll be able to hit 32 once it warms up and I change the oil to synthetic around 7500 miles.

I'm in pretty much the same exact situation. 18.2 MPG every tank so far, with 1700 miles. Granted it has been absolutely freezing here since the day I bought it, and I do have some hills on my daily commute.
