USB Hard Drive Music

Just purchased a SLE on saturday and I was reading through the user manual tonight and noticed that it said while having a usb storage device plugged in, the interface will only read the first 2500 songs, is this true? I was looking to build a permanently connected 250 gig hard drive into the center arm rest with all the music i have. Currently i have been using my 30 gig ipod with no issues but i have more music than the ipod can hold. Any ideas? Has anyone used a large hard drive with over 2500 songs on it? I feel like this is a great idea to replace the 40gig that comes built in the higher end model.

Welcome bignickb85.

This has been discussed many times in the past.
Probably the best suggestion is to get several 4GB USB sticks and put your songs on them.
Insert the USB you want to play and let music controller sort and index the songs, it only takes a few seconds.

As you stated, the limit is 2500 songs that the music controller can index and sort properly.
I have been using Micro SD disks, 4 and 8 MB both, with a Sandisc USB adapter. This works perfect, The micro SD plays in my cell phone and SanDisc players. The adapter is only about 3/4" long so you don't have the extra length sticking out of the port and getting in the way.
I got the adapter at Radio Shack and look for the disc's on sale.

Do you mean Micro SD cards not "Micro SD discs"?

I appreciate ideas but it still kind of sucks that i can't have all of my music on one hard drive. I think its ridiculous if i have to carry 7 usb sticks in my car for my music library of 8000+ songs. I guess maybe the only other solution is get a large enough ipod.

Do a search for other threads about this topic, it's been covered quite a bit.
If I remember correctly, the 40GB hard drive is used as such:

30GB for NAV
10GB for music

Wow, I'd never want to spend that much time in a car ;)
What about an external hard drive? I think those things come pretty big (GB-wise) and physically they are only like the size of an iPod (maybe a little bigger). It's like an enlarged USB stick...perhaps one of those would hold your gigantic stack of music! :D Haha.
Not the issue. The issue is that the terrain will only read 2500 songs on the drive, so its like i would have to carry 5 drives with 2500 songs each.
wouldnt be sucks a horrible idea aside from the cost of the drives. one for rock one for country etc.

this port will accept a standard USB thumb drive correct?
Does it have any issues with iPods that have more than 2500 songs?

I'm curious to know this as well. If it does, I'm losing access to more than 70% of my music. ???
Nope, i have a full 30 gig ipod into the usb port and all of my music can be accessed. I will say it is a bit slow at times or skips between some of the bands to select, but for the general purpose it does work and works pretty well.

Ahhh, that's a relief to know. Thanks for the reply.
