It seems that GM cars have a "transport mode" that is turned on to reduce battery drain for delivery from the factory to the dealer, which I did not know. I found a Corvette bulletin that lists the procedure for many models including the Equinox:
2016-2021 Buick Envision / 2019-2021 Chevrolet Blazer / 2018-2021 Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain / 2017-2021 Cadillac XT5 / 2017-2021 GMC Acadia / 2020-2021 Cadillac XT6
To turn Transport Mode On/Off, start the vehicle, press the brake pedal, activate the hazard flashers, hold the start button for at least 15 seconds. Transport Mode On/Off message will display on the DIC and the Battery Warning light will flash.
If anyone is parking their car for a long time, like over the winter, this might be a good procedure to follow.
