Hello All, I have noticed (last couple weeks) when I set my pedal parking brake, it does not set/stay. It will stay if I shift to reverse, but I used to be able to set in while in drive. Has anyone else had this issue? Is this something I should get checked out by a mechanic?

Why would you want to keep the vehicle in any gear other than "park" and set the emergency brakes ? Sorry but maybe I am missing something from the above question ?

If I set the emergency brake while in park, when I come out of park my car "shifts hard."
If you mean it's hard to shift out of park when you use the emergency brake, then it may be because you are shifting into park and then applying the E brake. This puts all the leveraged weight of the car on the parking pawl in the transmission and causes it to bind in some degree or another. The "proper" method is to stop the vehicle, and--while keeping pressure on the brake pedal--engage the E brake, then shift into park. This enables the E brake to take the stress of the car's weight rather than the pawl. Just sayin'

I was responding to probak. I never set my brake while in park. But my initial issue is now the only way I can set it is if I'm in reverse. Probak was asking why I wouldn't set in in park.

No, I thought you were saying you, set the parking brake and leave the car in reverse. Meaning the car is left in that gear and then is shut off, that is why I was asking why it is not then put in "park" ? As far as your question now that I understand it, yes you should be able to with your foot on the brake; set the parking brake stopped in drive ( or any gear ) and it should stay set until you release it. As mentioned this takes the pressure while on uneven ground , stopping that hard clunk out of park. Why you can only do this in reverse now is odd. Maybe mention it the next time your car is in for service, it obviously still works ( while in reverse ).

OP, you're right, the E-brake should stay on while you're still in Drive and have the regular foot brake depressed, have it checked out. And kudos to you for following the proper procedure when parking on a grade. This last July I had to educate my daughter on the proper procedure after she parked her 06 Lucerne on my brother's steep driveway, shifted to park then applied the E-brake. When she went to leave after a family barbecue, her column shifter wouldn't budge, the Park pawl was bound. It took my brother, myself, and 2 husky teenage boys pushing on the back of the car uphill with all our might to finally release the pawl bind. The car lurched ahead about 4-6 inches and all was good.
