Has anybody else tried to get a roof rack? We just got our new 2012 this month and it came without a rack! My fault for not doing more checking, but please! Forget about the utility of the rack. I think the car looks like crap without it. Has GM forgotten what the "U" in SUV stands for? What's next to save money, no radio? We can't live without it so I told them to put one on. The parts guy says that even if he could get his hands on one it would be $1160 for all the components, plus $220 to install it. Service guy said he was sure they would have to drill holes and weatherproof and if I did it myself I would void the warranty. Huh? I got the last laugh.

Last week I bought 2 pristine chrome racks at a Chevy dealership's sidewalk sale that had been installed once and removed. Got home and had the rack installed in 5 minutes. Flathead screwdriver and a socket. Pop off the existing channel moulding and the studs are right there! The only parts I had to get was the new filler moulding that goes from the windshield to the front of the rack.

If anybody is interested, I have one complete rack with chrome rail covers that I would sell. Includes the filler trim. I would go $575 with the cross rails or $450 without. Take care.

Re: No roof rack 2012 NOX LS? Found one though.

GM is clueless. You can strip down a vehicle to make it less expensive and slap the "LS" letters on the back of it, but it just doesn't make a lot of sense taking a roof rack off the top of an SUV or minivan. Maybe other manufacturers do the same thing, I don't know, but I think it's dumb.

That said, I could use a set of roof cross bars (since GM decided to strip those off the 1LT's), but I'm guessing you'd want to keep your complete set intact and wait for someone to buy the whole package.

I'd like to see your video, though. Before purchasing my 2011 Equinox, I almost bought a leftover 2007 Uplander 1LT and then later, a leftover 2008 Uplander LS (without the roof rack). Although the LS paled in comparison to the almost fully-loaded LT model, I thought I'd be able to add the missing accessories myself later on (including the roof rack), but I wasn't sure how difficult it would be to do (were the anchors already in the roof cavity???), or if it would cause a leak or rust to form somewhere.

The 2011 1LT Equinox comes with the Roof Rack Rails...Standard

The 2011 1LT Equinox Roof Rack Cross Bars are/were optional

FYI Colt...there are several other vehicles that come without cross bars...so before we go slamming GM...take a look around a little first

Thought it came with one (at least the side rails) but not for 2012.
Welcome to the Forum...

If it's any consolation...the 2011 LS didn't come with the rails or crossbars either

Re: No roof rack 2012 NOX LS? Found one though.

It took me 10 minutes soup to nuts on my 2012 with a naked roof to install the new rack. Here is the procedure:
1. The existing roof-length channel moulding is gently pried off, exposing 4 threaded studs. 2 fore, 2 aft.
2. Gently pry off the chrome or black rail cover trim (there are about 8 clips holding it on). If your rack is new, they will already be seperated. Then take your new short channel moulding (the rack does not go all the way forward to the windshield. This piece fills that space.) and slide it onto the front of the rack. You will see the tab on the rail that the moulding slides onto. Note: This short piece of moulding does not come with the rack, but you will need it if you are adding a rack to a naked roof! Part # 20874298/99 (left and right).
3. Place the rail over the threaded studs and tighten the 4 10mm nuts.
4. Snap down the channel moulding into place. It uses the same clips as your longer moulding did.
5. Place your rail cover trim onto the rail and snap back into place. Beautiful!

I appreciate your interest in the rails, but for now I think I will keep it together. It is all OEM, and there is a BUNCH of aftermarket **** floating around out there.
As soon as I figure out how to post pics, I will. I just registered on the site today.

Deleting the roof rack on the base model is one cost cutting measure that makes sense to me...I saw a poll a while back that showed over 60% of SUV owners have never used their roof rack for anything. Having said that, one thing I don't agree with is not having factory foglights even be an option for the LS/1LT.

Re: No roof rack 2012 NOX LS? Found one though.

they did something similar on the Traverse.
None come with CROSSBARS.
though on the roof-
2009- rails.
2010 early build- rails.
2010 later build- no rails.

so if you wanted cross bars all you had to do was order the cross bars on the 09-10 early..
2010 later builds and 2011-2012--- you had to buy the RAILS and crossbars as a kit

But like Noobnox said--- I know quite a few people who have SUVs and have NEVER used the rails. (or hitches)

I am one of those people that has never once used the roof rack. We got the LS, so, no roof rack/rails. Our old SUV ('01 Mitsubishi Montero) had roof racks...never once used them, and don't see myself every needing to use them in the future. If I really ever need the extra space for something like luggage, I'd rather use one of those wire mesh shelves (no idea what they're really called) that mount onto your trailer hitch. I would think those would cause less drag and less mileage kill, compared to something on your roof. I don't know, just my thoughts. And if I ever have anything really big, I don't know, mattress? I would just borrow a friends truck or rent a u-haul.

They do look kind of nice though, the extra height on the Nox looks kind of nice.

I just bought a new bed and the old mattress and box springs are just sitting in my living room as I try to devise a way of getting rid of them. Don't want to be trashy and put it by the dumpster and don't want to pay someone to take it way - decisions decisions - ha!

Hitch Mounted Cargo Rack. I also use a Thule Roof mounted cargo bag. (clothes go in there) and then Bunjee cords are used to make the bag as flat as possible for aerodynamics. With the load shown (about 55 glass bottles, sodas, Cooler full of drinks)- cargo bag- 5 passengers and more stuff in the rear- I managed about 21-23 MPG from LA to FL.
The rack is one of my favorite Add-ons. (I also added LED turn signals to it).

As they say, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I personally prefer my Terrain without the roof racks for appearance purposes.

Less air drag is just a side benefit for me.

I had a first edition Equinox with the rails and cross rails include and the only thing I used them for was to hang on to when drying the roof after a car washing. :)

Ahhh, now I know what Sumr was talking about (e.g. wire mesh things) :thumb: ;D

Ooo, LED turn signals, good idea.

I like that you used about 20 bungee's on the hitch mounted cargo rack, lol. (yes! now I know the name!) Looks a little unnecessary, but it's probably what I would do too, I'd be terrified something would fly off. Looks good though!

I found it funny that the "Cargo Package" that consists of the roof rack cross bars and cargo net are a $250 option. I tracked down the part numbers myself and ordered them on GMpartsdirect.com and get them shipped to my door for significantly less. Easy install too if you already have the main rails. I believe the p/n for the cross bars is 19202488 (~$110), the cargo net is 19244271. Total shipped I paid $17, and gmparts direct is not known for cheap shipping costs.

Glad to hear that you bought what you wanted/needed...

but you forgot to mention the third part of what makes up the 2011 "cargo package"...

Now maybe you can still save $$$ your way...dunno...haven't priced it out that way...

Just sayin'
