I wonder if anyone else has experienced this problem. Both cup holders (center console)rattle when I place a water bottle in them. It is not a plastic squeak noise, but rather like a tinny sound or a metallic rattle. When it starts happening, I can remove the bottle and the rattle ceases. I have repositioned the water bottle and it does not help. It is so annoying that I end up removing the drink and placing it in the door side panel. It is strange because the cup holders have rubber retention pads that hold the bottle intact. I'm thinking there might be some metallic spring retainers hidden behind the side walls of the holders that are causing the problem. Any ideas?

How about does the vehicle have the ambiant lighting in that area? maybe socket for lights in that area are lose
Hard water could be the cause of the problem

Yes, it does have the ambient lighting, but the lights all work fine. Since it also rattles in daylight hours when the lights are not on (I assume they are off during the daylight hours), I'm not sure how this could be the problem. Perhaps a light socket could still work, even if it is loose; I will check it out. I have used several different container sizes and it still rattles with all of them. I agree though, something has to be loose somewhere underneath or behind the cup holders. Strange that there is no rattle when the cup holders are empty.

Softer water might do the trick. Haven't done that.
