Within the past month, my 2010 2.4L Equinox has been seeming to idle oddly. If anyone can help me out on what might be causing this, I would appreciate it. My warranty on the car is up and now I am wondering what to do next with this vehicle. I do not even have 30,000 miles on the car yet.
When I turn the car on before putting it into forward or reverse, the rpm seems to jump around a bit. I will notice the needle drop like it normally does until it hits around 1,000 rpm and then jump up a bit, then down, then up again until I put the car in gear. Any idea what might cause this?
A larger issue I have noticed is that after turning the car off, it seems like the engine is still running and shakes the entire car until it winds down. What could be causing this?
I have loved my Equinox and this is really the only issues I have had but it is disappointing and concerning me a lot. Would you recommend I take it to a Chevy dealer to be looked at? Would these issues be covered under the powertrain warranty?

I do recommend you take your vehicle into the dealership. If the issue is found to be from a defective part under the powertrain warranty then you will be covered. In general, the powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission, transfer case and axle assemblies on light duty vehicles. You can always private message me your VIN for your warranty parameters. I would like to stay involved with your concern. Please keep me posted once you return from the dealership.

Thanks Erica, I actually just took it in to be looked into. It sounds like the service person was familiar with this issue of what he called 'diesling' so I am hoping they will be able to find out what is causing this. He seemed to think the gas in the oil would cause something like this so I will wait and see. I am glad to know its covered under the powertrain warranty.

I am assisting Erica here on the forum. Great to hear that the dealer is working to fix this issue for you and that the repair is covered under your warranty! Please continue to keep us updated.
Carbon build up...trust me. Classic sign, it's all related to the faulty (bad) timing chains...
The procedure is to de-carbonize the top half of the engine...hopefully they will acknowledge the chains at fault and replace everything rather than just de-carbonize the heads/valves. If not, you may be in for a long ride...

This is frustrating because I will probably not know what they are planning to do until they fix the issue (or their version of fix the issue). Is there a way to know if they fixed this correctly as you mentioned?
I was planning to finally keep a car long-term but now I am debating selling it and going to a different manufacturer, this is crazy that there is so many issues with this vehicle. I like the new Acadia but no way will I trust buying a car from them at this point.
I also just realized my parents probably had the same issue on their 2011 Equinox that had the check engine light come on, I didn't put the two together until I started having issues.

I didn't know that there were problems with timing chains with the '10s. Care to elaborate ? I am driving a '10, and just want to be prepared to look for the warning signals ! I thought that the carbon buildup was caused by cheap gas, and the DI engine. :banghead:
Just got a call back from the dealer and they said they replaced the fuel pump, is this something I should be satisfied with or should I push them to do something further?
I have never gotten a check engine light but I did just recently start to get the 'dieseling' for a second or less randomly. I am hoping that there has not been any long term damage and that I caught this quick enough, thanks to this forum.
Dealer also fixed an issue with my fender free of charge so I am pretty happy with them for my first visit being out of warranty.

To the original poster, just keep an eye on your vehicle...another "joe six pack" way to tell if your vehicle is pinging under light load, ride next to a jersey wall and accelerate lightly with your window open, preferably on the drivers side (with no traffic next to you). I just mention this because, your dealer is not going to take the time to scope the upper half unless you have the ping / knock. If you do continue to have problems and need repair codes to supply to the dealer, let me know...I have them all. Although the fuel pump could be the culprit (another issue) check for the ping. Most people don't notice it until it gets to the point of hearing it in the compartment.
Do a search of some of the issues, not only on this site but all of the others...there's a ton of information of how it all starts.

There are some known issues with the 2010-2011 Equinox's. Some leak fuel and result in black oil. Pull your dipstick and check the color. Others have a timing chain issues and some have the problem I've had (see link above). If your oil is low in between 3K mile oil changes, you might have a different problem. The tell-tale sign of this is the "sounds like a diesel when starting" sound. You mentioned this in your post. If it idles rough and sounds like a diesel, look at your oil. Is it low, but clean? If so you might need an engine replacement. Is it black? Sounds like a fuel issue. Is it clean and in the hash marks, but still rough? Probably the fuel pump. Either way, you *should* have a 36/60/100 warranty. The 100K covers the power train so odds are good it'll be covered, depending on the issue. That said, quite a few people on this and other forums have had repeat issues due to mis-diagnosis. I would listen to your car carefully even after the fuel pump is replaced. I've read of people having timing chains and fuel pumps replaced, but the problems still occuring only to then get their entire engine replaced.

Purchase a hand held diagnostics tool $35.00 .Plug it in to your jack underneath by the hood release turn ignition in on position and read the codes . Google the codes for your year make and model . This will tell you what is wrong . You can purchase the hand held diagnostics tool at auto zone , they are the same for all cars .
