Groups like consumer reports say that these are not necessary any more, mostly because factory paint and rust protection is so good now. These are just a big profit center for dealerships.
The basic modules are just little batteries that get attached to the frame of the vehicle; the current prevent the cathodic reaction that causes rust -- it's chemistry 101. If you're really hot for it, 90% of the time you can get it much cheaper after-market.
