I was just hoping to get some advice/opinions on a situation I'm in. To make a long story short my car was written off last week and my rental is done in two days. I went to the local GMC dealer on Saturday and put in am order for a Carbon Black, SLT 2, AWD, V6, rear dvd, nav package, & 19" wheels. He said he was going to check on 4 dealers who had that exact one in stock. Got back to me today and said 3 were sold and one was being used as a demo. Now let me preface this by saying he was a good guy and already discounted $2300, plus another $2300 (GM Visa points, & Grad Rebate), plus the $750 GM Service card that's being offered here in Canada. All figures Canadian dollars by the way.

Anyways the demo has roughly 2000km's, or approx 1250 miles, on it. He's saying that he could knock maybe another $500-$1000 off it. Should I do this? Of I don't do it and order one it could be until mid-April, and no rental also causes a bit of difficulty as my wife and I would be sharing her car.

Thoughts?

Yeah $13400 for a 2005 Mazda6 Sport with way too many km's on it, so not complaining there. Just didn't know what most consumers expect in discount when the vehicle isn't truly 'new'

Thanks for the help. He's checking tomorrow on the true KM's and condition, so I all is good I'll do it up. I just want to make sure that my warranties start with the KM's on the Terrain when I get it and not from zero. I also want to make those no dent, scratches, stains, marks, etc on the interior and exterior as I still have to have the paint, rust, and leather protection done. Thanks again.

Funny, it's the owner's wife who's driving around this one as well! Did you find any issues with it?

Frankly, I'm suprised that he is offering you any kind of a discount on another dealer's demo unit, usually whatever dealer has been driving it needs to bite the bullit for any reduction in it's value. Any discount he gives you is right out of his own gross profit unless he has arranged to have the other dealer cover it for him.

My wife currently works as a sales manager for the largest GM dealer in Canada(where I also used to work) and they don't use new inventory for demo units at all, even the owner of the place drives a demo from the used inventory because GM doesn't offer any kind of incentive to cover the cost. The exception is for the fleet manager, he can get demo depreciation applied to a 1/2 ton truck for his work/personal use.

If, by demo unit, he means that is was a GM company car that the dealership bought for inventory then it will have some reasonably heavy rebates added to it and will still be sold with full new vehicle warranty from the date & Mileage it is delivered to the customer. These units usually have between 2500-5000 Km on them and were driven by someone like a GM regional rep for about 6 months. I would think that it is a little early yet to see Terrains showing up as ex-company cars but I guess that it is possiable, they did start shipping production units about 6-7 month ago.

I'm not sure of the entire story, and my sales guy stopped emailing a while back (assuming he went home!). Here's what he wrote last...
"Chris, I have contacted the dealer with the demo. He is checking with the owners wife to see how many k's she has on the truck. I will let you know if there is a way to make a better deal on it. I might be able to save you $500-$1000 if you took that truck. "

So i'm assuming that its the other dealer that would do the discount. From the amount of people i've talked to about this, 100% have told me to take the demo unit. I just get paranoid about paying new vehicle price for a vehicle that's not truly 'new'. I'm assuming too that the Terrain would be in excellent condition as the owner would know that if they did something to it, they would lose more value.

Another question, being as I added the paint, leather, and rust protection...will they still apply it even though the vehicle has been used for a while?

Last week I did exactly this. All the same specs -- only difference was mine had 2250 miles on it. Discounted it $2500 and gave me double Kelly trade in. We jumped at it. I wasn't going to wait 2-3 months and pay MSRP.
I didn't have to have the rear entertainment sytem, tow package or 19" chrome wheels, but what the hell ...it was there begging us to take her home. ;D

New wrinkle in the story..

They found another where the deal went through, has everything I want plus the trailer towing package (which I dont want), and cargo package (didn't really need) for an extra $600. It's in Ottawa and they would drive it down, said it would be at about 600KM's (i'm in Kitchener Ontario, about 550 KM's away).

Or I can get the demo, but the 2000 KM's would count against my warranty, im fighting that part at the moment.

So I asked basically that I would take the one from Ottawa if they could knock some more off the price, or the demo if they could reset the warranty.

I would be leery about the demo. One would think people would take care of a essentially free care, but many times that is not the case. My husband has been in the detailing business working for car dealerships for the past 8 years or so and always says the demos are the nastiest cars he sees. He says he will never by a demo. People don't respect things they don't have to pay for.

I doubt they can reset the warranty, but maybe a little more off the price....all they can say is no. Good luck.
There's a nice Harley dealer in Kitchener, also met one of our displaced chapter members (Chicag area)for lunch at the Crabby Joes there. Went through there last year on my way to Barrie. Nice town.

Lived here my whole life without many complaints, except that with RIM and Google being in Waterloo (our twin city) has caused rapid growth but road expansion is still very behind. I know the Harley dealership you talk of, and Crabby's is a good place, although there's much better around :p

Next time I'm up that way I'll have to get some names. Going to St. Catharines this year so won't be going near Kitchener.

So it looks like i'm getting the one from Ottawa. It's exactly what I wanted, but has the towing and cargo package as well. He's giving those two packages to me at around $600 so I figured that was alright. Hope to get it by Saturday!

and if you're going to St.Catherine's you should look into driving another 20 minutes up to Niagara Falls if you've never been!

Did Niagra a few years ago. Depending on the weather I may just ride south of the lake and around Niagra.
