OIL FILTER

Was researching PF48 oil filters for other mfg's part numbers and ran across that this filter is also used on 06 to 08 Corvettes. So it must be a good filter. ;D

You got that right.
First Oil Change

Approaching 1.5 months of ownership and 3,000 miles. Not sure what the Terrain manual says, but what is the feeling about when to change the oil for the first time?
I had the oil and filter changed on my 6 cyl Terrain at 1200 k's or approx 800 miles............my thought is that you are going to see the most wear in the first few k's/miles,any high spots from the machining process will wear of in the beginning,no sense in having them possibly floating around ..............The girl at the service desk gave me a strange look ,but in my opinion the oil is pretty darn important ,and the first change which may cost $25 -50 is well worth it...just my thought

There is an oil life monitor that tells you when oil change is required. You can check oil life in the DIC. Usually about 7000-8000 klm(4500-5000 miles) or so till change.
Severe driving conditions may require changing sooner. If driving conditions are not severe(dusty, hot) changing sooner while not harmful is just a waste of money.

I always do my first oil change @ 1k miles because of the exact reason...then I perfer to get the engine running something better then factory fill

After that on my last car I was doing oil changes @ 5k on the DI...Even though I'm running great oil, I know my 2.0 was having issues with fuel dulution, its common issue with DI engines since the fuel gets atomized into the air, the PCV systems just have not caught up.

I've been running Penzoil Platinum....Might go Penzoil Ultra aftering seeing its Voa. I usually send my oil in to get anyalized...I'm very anal when it comes to the cars I own. My company car I run till the OLM says 10% or less, which is about 8-10k miles. Not so worried about. I usually put 100k on a car in 24-30months for work, have never had an issue following the OLM vs doing it @ 5k...just with Direct Injection I'm more cautious...espeically when Mobil 1 5w30 after 3k miles was shearing to a 20 weight in a high compression turbo....

Are you implying that the oil used in the factory is somehow inferior? You have been misinformed.
I know for a fact some GM engines are filled with synthetic oil.

I know on the non-premium fuel engines it comes with regular oil. Syn is going in our Ecotec at 1k miles. I cut open the filter on our last Ecotec (non-di) after its first OCI and it had metal particles stuck in it. Yes, it was a drop in filter but ya catch my drift.
Talking about metal particles, does the Terrain have a magnetic drain plug?
I've always had mag plug in all my cars and bikes. I looked at the internet, but couldn't find one for the Terrain. Anyone know of another application that will have the same plug?
IIRC, the non-DI Ecotec still uses the same drain plug so if you can find one for it, it should fit.

Only certain engines get Mobil 1 Syn @ the factory

And our engines are certainly not those engines....

Camaro SS
Vette
Cobalt SS
HHR SS

Only ones from Chevy I know of...

And just for Giggles I looked it up for you

I send mine in to blackstone for analysis...will be interesting to see this @ 1k and what they say :)....The cobalt ss with 2.0L SIDI Turbo was hard on oil. But looking at other VOA's it seems all DI engines are hard on oil
Yea, its just not GM DIs which are hard on oil. Check out some of the DI VWs and the gunk they build up. A good, quality oil is gonna go a long way on DI engines.

This is my 4th car with a DI engine......All DI engines will gunk up over time. Its a nature of the best. Reason I run pp due to the additive cleaning package. PCV systems just have not caught up with the technology, and gunk build-up is apart of the game. Just needs a good cleaning @ 30k (thats what we usually said in the vw forum) Seafoam was becoming my friend :)
Seafoam is good but I like MCCC (Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner) better. It actually turns to a foam and sits in the upper parts of the combustion chamber unlike seafoam. I even took out a sparkplug when I did it on my LS1 and there was foam right there. Was pretty cool.
So whats your brand AC Delco, K&N, Fram, Purolator ?
Amsoil
Dealer Oil Change

Our Terrain has less than 4,000 miles and we have owned it for almost 3 months. I scheduled a dealer visit tomorrow for an oil change (the first) since we will be driving to SC and then eventually FL starting Sunday. Should I request semi-syntethic or just go with whatever the GM dealer puts in "standard"?
