I have noticed lately that my 2011 I4 Terrain makes noise when I start it up. Seems to be when the engine is warm. For about a second, when it first starts, it sounds like a diesel engine starting. Its just for a second of starting..then sounds normal. anyone else having this issue??

Could this be it?

From the Manual...

The vehicle has a
Computer-Controlled Cranking
System. This feature assists in
starting the engine and protects
components. If the ignition key is
turned to the START position,
and then released when the
engine begins cranking, the
engine will continue cranking
for a few seconds or until the
vehicle starts.[/color] If the engine does
not start and the key is held in
START for many seconds,
cranking will be stopped after
15 seconds to prevent cranking
motor damage. To prevent gear
damage, this system also
prevents cranking if the engine
is already running. Engine
cranking can be stopped by
turning the ignition switch to
ACC/ACCESSORY or
LOCK/OFF.

Mine makes a noise also. Sounds like something spinning and grinding right after I start it up. Doesn't happen everytime though. Only happens for a second.

I dont think its what Mochanox pointed out.. but I will pay more attention to my starting to see if it is related to it. basically, starting the car like have any other car.. It sounds like a diesel engine, or to me, it sounds like rod knocking..Engine always starts right away..not long cranking at all. starts right up. doesnt happen all the time..

wrusprod and Phantm006,

I would be happy to look into this for you both. In order to do further research, I will need the VIN for the vehicle and the current mileage. Please feel free to contact me either here on the thread or via private message. I look forward to hearing from you.

More than likely its the DI fuel pump which is camshaft driven and is completely normal.

I'm having similar issues upon start up...the fiance says it sounds like a loud crinkle/grinding sound. I have been driving it for almost a week and have yet to hear the sound. Anyone have ideas of what this sound could be? Apparently it happens at complete random..no rhyme or reason to how it happens.

I have a 2011 Terrain SLT AWD 4 cyl with 3300 miles on it. About a month after I got it, it started to make a noise like a diesel when it is started. It only does it when the engine is cold. I had it in to the dealer, they let the car sit 4 hours, started it up, coulden't here the noise. Changed the oil and told me if I continued to have a problem to come back. Well it still does it. Has anyone had any luck getting this sound resolved?

All I can say for it is I went and got the ECM update done today. I don't get the low end rattle, the start up noise and it sounds a lot like a regular engine instead of a baby diesel. May help to try that.

Have you brought this to the attention of your dealership that the issue was not resolved? I would recommend contacting them again. Please feel free to keep me updated regarding this concern either on the thread or via private message. Thank you.

My 2010 Equinox has done this on and off since new. It now has 17000 miles on it and it still does it once in a great while even though the weather has warmed up and I have changed to synthetic oil. It doesn't really sound like a metallic noise. It sounds more like things that are electrically driven getting in their proper position immediately after starting. It doesn't really last long enough to zero in on it and it doesn't do it on a restart. Only have heard it after the first start in the AM. Total times I have heard it in it's 17000 miles is probably no more than six or eight.

Why don't you record the noise then post it here or slap it to your dealer's face so that they know what you're talking about?

Mine Equinox started a lifter type piston rattle noise for about 2 seconds this morning at 35 degrees. Only has 300 miles on it and it's only happened this one time.

It must have been a fluke as the last two days at start up the noise is gone and it's quite again. Maybe I should have had a second cup of coffee.

rcturner,

I would recommend keeping an eye on this. If you find that this is occurring more frequently or that it is the result of some other issue, please feel free to contact me as well as your local dealership for more information. Please continue to keep us updated. Thank you.

As seldom as this happens, it would be impossible to recreate it for a dealers service department. Do you have some idea what it is and is there something I should be looking for?

I've come to realize that I hear the noise more when you remote start. It only makes it after the car starts. I want to call it a "wind back" noise. Just reminds me of the toy cars you had to pull back and let go.

I heard a new noise today on cold start, one that I'm going to attribute to the belt tensioner until I can check it out further.
