I'm new in this forum.
…I got my “White GMC Terrain SLT-2 AWD v6” last June 16, 2010 and put some exterior accessories like Windows Pender, Mud Guard (front & back), GMC Hitch Cover, Chrome Gas Cover, & White Side Molding with center Chrome Accent (special & exclusive order to vehicle molding manufacturer to protect my investment). We drove it from Ohio to Orlando, Florida for our 1-week vacation then go to Chicago the following week for 2 days trip. I like the new look of my GMC Terrain BUT…I heard noise that we don’t know if that is in the engine or in the front wheels. The noise is something like a bearing housing spinning without grease. The noise sound also is similar to the sound of either the Pressure Cooker that will start to boil or a Cricket in the woods. You will start hearing the noise at the speed of 30mph & up. Once I put it in a cruise control at 30-45mph you will hear the noise as well as at 65mph without pushing the accelerator. With or without cruise control on the noise is still there. You will not hear the noise at 25mph & below. I was thinking that the noise is coming from the air blowing my front grill if I run more than 30mph. Thus anyone experience the same noise in your GMC Terrain?

I’ve been in one of the GMC Dealer from where I brought my GMC Terrain AWD SLT-2 last Saturday 9/18/2010 to voice out my problem about the noise that where hearing at the front of Terrain engine & they say that they didn’t hear anything! We test another GMC Terrain 4cyl SLT1 and I didn’t hear anything like what I am talking about so they told us to get another opinion from other dealer if they found what we’re talking about… so we’ve decided to go to another GMC dealer which is near to our place last 21/9/2010 and they found it is the FRONT HUBS! The left side have a much noisier than the right side so they ordered a replacement for both of them to replace the hub. We’re lucky because our GMC Terrain is under warranty with 6,600+ miles only. They going to call us once the spare parts are arrive!

I recorded the noise using my cell phone.
If you want to hear the recorded noise just PM me & I'll send you the link.

As I’ve said… the noise is something like that if you have the steel bar & put the ring on it then spin it faster, that’s the sound you will hear…that is something winding sound. Make sure that your radio or stereo are turn off so that you will know if there’s a problem in your new GMC Terrain as long as it is under warranty because it’s kind of annoying & we don’t feel safe to drive it on the highway!
…front hubs doesn’t help to eliminate the noise…
…so they make another diagnostic & found that it’s in the transmission line! So I need to leave the GMC Terrain at the dealer so that they can fix it & give us their rent a car for temporary use. I wish they going to change it in a new one again!
I received a phone call again 8:30am from GMC Dealer today 24/9/2010 regarding the status of my GMC Terrain and they say they need to change the whole thing & they ordered it to be arrive at either Monday or Tuesdays & should be running my GMC Terrain by Wednesday!
What is the possibility that the GMC dealer can change my GMC Terrain in a brand new one? I ask this question because for me having a major operation in my GMC Terrain is quite dangerous now to drive in the highway at the speed of 70-85mph or more!

Once they replace the affected parts, you will be as good as new.

Yes! I will inform the forum about this problem next week Wednesday and see if that (transmission line) is the real problem. I hope it is.
The reason why I trade in my GMC Envoy it because of the idler pulley & fuel sensor! I pay for $1,400 for both just to fix the sensor then I decided to trade into GMC Terrain SLT2 v6. I thought my problem will be solve if I have a brand new vehicle but it wasn't!
Ok until next week.

Yes I'm still covered the GMC warranty. We called also 2 days ago the GMC customer service & voice out about this problem. They say that they are going to push the dealer to fix our vehicle from time to time until we're satisfied to solve the problem.

No sure exactly what you're saying but sounds like:

1. The final diagnoses is that the real problem is inside the transmission.
2. To fix the problem you want them to drop in a totally brand new transmission, rather than spend 15hrs in labor pulling the whole thing apart and replacing the bad part (ie. gear, bearing, bushing???)....and then putting it all back again....and hope they didn't miss anything.

The dealer would most likely put in a new tranny instead of pulling the original one apart anyway. If they don't, insit on it....new car, new tranny, simple as that.

They say that they ordered the WHOLE Transfer Case (four wheel drive parts)

No worries, the transfer case is a bolt on part, there is nothing to be concerned. Cars are designed to have parts swapped. It will be as good as new.
Its unfortunate but don't feel discouraged.
If it's the tranny they're Getrag or ZF IIRC and the dealership won't open them for repair, they just get a new unit.

Let us know who it goes!

Good luck.

Finally! I got my Terrain. The problem has been fixed...they change the 2-Front Hubs and Wheel Bearing but this doesn't help to eliminate the noise so they replace the Transfer Case & filled with fluid align the noise is gone. Now I can sleep well & have peace of mind.

Let me share to you the recorded noise of my Terrain before so that you will know if the noise that I got in my Terrain is the same noise that you've experience right now.

I have a 2010 SLT2 with about 20K mileage on it right now. My Terrain started making a whinning noise both idling and while driving at hwy speed and/or street speeds. I took it in on the same day (December 29, 2010) and they said the noise seemed to be coming from the transmission. They gave it back to me on January 7, 2011 and the work order said that they replaced the p/s hose and fluid and flush and bleed p/s system. Took it home and the drive back was fine. It stayed parked for 3 days and when I went back to work on January 11th the noise was back... I took it back to them same day (yesterday) and now I wait.... It's friggin cold here (-31) and I know cold weather makes cars whine for a couple of minutes until everything is warmed up, but this is just not right - no other cars on the road were making this noise! I want my Terrain back good as new! This should NOT be happening with a 6 month old vehicle.... I am terrified at what else will happen as the mileage adds on. I wonder if this is Power Steering or Alternator... :-\

I'll keep you posted when/if they fix it. On a good note, they have been VERY nice and prompt about taking the vehicle with no appointment.

Same thing happened to me today. Not as cold here, only about 62 degrees. After it got warm it quieted down. Not the transmission as I put it in nutural and the noise would increase with the throttle position. Maybe power steering or alternator. Vehicle is 8 mos old and 5670 miles.
