I'm a little concerned....
I bought a 2011 Equinox 2.4 FWD yesterday. It was used with 3700 miles on it. I've checked the avg mpg on screen display several times today and the reading has consistently been between 16-18 mpg. What the heck is going on? From what I've read, this isn't normal.

Any thoughts?

Reset the Average MPG and if you already have done that, I would try calculating it manually. You should be getting more like 25 mpg on average

The 2.4 really does take a long time to break-in....at least 10k miles. My engine was pretty stiff when new and the gas mileage wasn't great (the best I got was just over 28 mpg on a highway trip with around 5k on the clock and anywhere from 19-22 mpg around town) but now it has loosened up, it feels peppier and revs smoother. I was able to crack 33 mpg on my last road trip and consistently get 20-23 in town. (not counting long traffic jams spent idling)

I agree, give it a little time and some mileage. My wife's car just cracked 6k miles on a road trip. The mileage was not impressive at first, but now I average 26 mpg at 74 mph on that trip. It gets the advertised 32 mpg at 55 mph.

Feel free to click the Mileage tracker I use when I fuel up to get the "real" reading. See banner below.
I just hit 3300 miles and have my own 19/20 in town average frustrations. A recent 206mi trip where elevation was almost constantly down added about 4mpg to what I was getting on the current tank.
I detailed some aspects of the terrain I drive daily in the gas log. Hills - any hills- kill the mpg...

I'm interested to see what happens at 10,000+. I'll hit 5,000 by the time the school year starts...

Thanks for the replies. I did a little more research last night and I am finding many people saying the same things you guys are; just give it a little time.

One more question. ECO mode? Is it ok to use this all the time? I do about 75% of my driving in town.

I don't mess with ECO mode in town much. I don't like the shift points. I do use it on the highway. On highway it will hang on to the higher gear longer on a hill instead of downshifting. Might lose a touch of speed though.

I would also recommend driving the vehicle a little longer and seeing if that makes a difference. If you feel that this is the result of some other concern, I would recommend contacting your local dealer. Please keep me posted either way. Thank you in advance.

Thank you Tricia, I appreciate the reply.

I have spoken with my dealer and he has agreed that I need to give it a little time, and if things do not improve, he will have me bring it in to the service department and have them take a look.

My Terrain is in Eco mode 100% of the time; no problems with shift points for me ---------------but that's just my opinion.

Wondering why someone would part with a new car at 3700 miles........
Probably bad gas mileage and they knew something was wrong with it... Just Kidding... we bought ours used from a family who needed a minivan for some reason and traded in for a really big loss and have had no issues with our 2010.

I have a friend who used to work at a Honda dealership, and he once told me that he was surprised by how many people would buy a brand new car, drive it for a couple months and then decide they want a different model of the same car, or even something entirely different. Of course this was back in the late 90's when more people could afford to take a loss and treat cars as an impulse purchase..

I know the person who traded it in. He bought it new in Dec '10 and then decided this summer that he'd rather have a truck with 4WD in order to be able to drive on the beach for fishing trips.

I had it in the dealer today just for a once over to check out and make sure there weren't any filters stopped up or the like. The technician basically told me that he agreed that the MPG was low, but that he wouldn't know where to begin to look for problems because the computer wasn't giving him any "failure codes". I can't say that I am satisfied with his answer......
