So we have a 2010 Chevy equinox.
The problem is the car shifts but will not shift when in manual mode with the plus and negative buttons.

We are thinking it might be the button its self or the electronic components behind that button.
I can't find any info on the electronic peace behind that button but wanted to find out what would be the next step in locating the problem.

Not trying to spend a **** ton of money.

Keep in mind the manual mode is not a true manual. It merely sets the highest gear. So if it is set to 4, the transmission will still automatically shift itself in the range of gears between 1st and 4th.

Manual mode does not allow you to shift up and down through the gears like a true manual mode on other cars.

If you don't tow anything, the manual shift mode is not of much value, IMHO.

Did you shift the gear to L before you play with the +/- switch?

Not sure about 2010 model but on mid 2010s this is a common issue, fixed by replacing the shift knob. My 2013 had the same issue but I didn't bother fixing it as I rarely used the manual mode. On the 2013 and similar the shift knob pulls straight up and off, but it is extremely hard to do according to others who posted her about it. If you do a search there are other threads about this.

I have the same issue and purchased a new shift lever before removing the original. The wiring is short and in my case the plug the the shift lever wiring plugs into is damaged. I went to remove the new lever but I'm not strong enough it appears. When manual is selected the position on the console does not change color and thus using the switches has not input. I wished I could change or limit the transmission gear at times when hill climbing or on steep descends but unless or until I remove the stick and repair the wiring that won't be happening.
