Key Fob question

I just bought a 2009 Equinox and I was surprised to find that I have to be about 15' or closer to get the key fob to work. I replaced the battery and no change. Is there something wrong with my key fob all together perhaps?

That doesn't sound right, my fob for my 2011 will work at least from 40 or 50 feet. That's the about the farthest I have tried it so far. You might try cleaning the battery contacts in the fob also.
15' sounds awfully short.

GM key fobs are notorious for being short distance. Our 2010 remote start must be in line of sight and it seems about 50 to 100 feet max. They told me that it was due to liability issues with a remote start when you can't see the vehicle. There is an aftermarket extender you can buy so I'm told.

In other words they BSed you. You can be in north pole and start the car in Florida if you have 2011 Equinox, wireless reception, and On-star app.

It's the typical expected dealer response to an issue they cannot or will not address.

Of course I was just talking the fob and not On-Star.

BTW where does one find an app for remote starting with On-Star?

The app dont work on our 2010's yet...
Even unlocking the doors you need to be pretty close. I traded in my dodge charger, i could unlock that from 50' or more easy. No biggie i guess, i can still remote start from my living room. Im very happy with my Nox purchase anyhow.

The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter functions work up to 195 feet (60 m) away from the vehicle. There are other conditions which can affect the performance of the transmitter.

If there is a decrease in the RKE operating range, try this:
• Check the distance. The transmitter may be too far from the vehicle. Stand closer during rainy or snowy weather.
• Check the location. Other vehicles or objects may be blocking the signal. Take a few steps to the left or right, hold the transmitter higher, and try again.
• Check the transmitter’s battery. See “Battery Replacement” later in this section. • If the transmitter is still not working correctly, see your dealer/retailer or a qualified technician for service.

This can be found on page 2-4 of your owner’s manual. If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly. Thank you.

Are you talking about just the remote door fob or the remote start fob?

My remote start key fob works fantactically. I start my car from my office on the second floor rear of the building. Even from the second floor bathroom in my house. Neither of which are line of sight. It will unlock the doors at least 100+ feet away in a parking lot.
The only thing I don't like about the remote start fob is there isn't any kind of feedback like all my other remote start fobs had. Either a click or a light would have been great.
Look on the bright side ... at least you won't be setting off your alarm from the backside of your house - like I did AGAIN accidentally (for the 2nd time) this past weekend. Finally thinned out the key ring and substituted a larger ring so the keys aren't as tight to the PANIC button (which is located in a bad spot near the heads of the other keys).

One thing I HAVE noticed about my keyfob, though ... it USED to work across the parking lot where I work (which is a pretty far distance), but now it only works at about HALF this distance. When I first got the car I would come out of the building and start repeatedly pressing the UNLOCK button to see at what distance the car would respond. I was shocked to see how far away it actually worked! But then I accidentally dropped the keyfob on a concrete floor while locking some doors one night on the way out and now it only works at the much shorter distance. No apparent damage to the keyfob, but the distance is just shorter now. Maybe the battery took a hit more than the fob itself??
