2014 2.4 - I believe LEA engines were 2012-2017, and LAF were pre 2014 correct?

As well all know the pcv, piston/rings, timing chain, oil consumption issues were not fixed with the LEA engines. I have read LAF to LEA swaps requiring taking the LAF cam, cam phasers, etc. And putting them in the LEA.

I am looking at pulling an engine at the local junk yard, and depending what I can find, would an LAF engine work? I plan on testing for compression and pulling the oil pan to confirm any possible issues. I also will be installing new timing chain, sprockets, balance chain/sprockets, guides, pistons, rings, and oil pump.

Thoughts? I believe most of the possible vehicles there are 2012+, so this is hypothetical. But if there are differences between 2012 and 2014 please fill me in.

Maybe try searching Posts from users @christopherlompoc, @Davek, or @mgmsequinox. They've all since left this Forum, but I think they had the most experience and/or first-hand knowledge with the 2.4L Engine.

But let me ask ... how long do you intend to hold onto this vehicle? If it's at least, say ... 3 years, why not look into a Rebuilt Engine from Jasper in IN? The whole thing might cost you $5k (installed), but you do get a 3-year warranty with it (last I checked).

Someone loves DIY and someone may not have 5k. So getting a refurbished engine is not always a good choice.

Sure ... or it could just be a "project"/hobby vehicle. Thought I'd ask anyway ...

Oh ... I should've added you to that 2.4L Owner List. You might be our new "authority" here, now ...:)

@Borjawil i am in the process of swapping a 2017 equinox engine into my 2011 terrain that i purchased for my son. According to Gm the head, block, cams, pistons, etc are the same from 2011-2017. I am rebuilding this 2017 first and then i will be swapping it out with the original engine. You can go to rock auto and build your vehicle and whatever you are trying to replace it with and compare part numbers
