I test drove 8 different Equinox at 5 different dealers before deciding to buy one. One of the big factors in my choice was my daily drive is about 2.5 hours and the Equinox had the most comfortable seat of all the other cars (CRV, subaru, outlander, excape). I got a 2012 1LT AWD with the driver convience package. My car was brought in from another dealer and was delivered to me in a snowstorm, so I did not drive my actual car until after delivery when I was heading home.

I left the dealer and about 5 minutes down the road had to pull into a parking lot to see if I could get the seat adjusted right. It felt like I was sitting on a steel rod running right across the middle of the seat. When i pressed down on the seat with my hand, it felt like there was no support at all under the back section of the seat, then you hit a hard ridge and the front of the seat has hard cushion. I tried to drive to work and back, but it was very painful with that feel of a steel rod under my butt. I ended up buying a gel cushion to sit on to get home, which made the car drivable, but still not comfortable. None of the cars I test drove (including an extended half day test drive) felt like this.

The service department was closed by the time I had taken delivery, so I brought the car up the next day to show the dealer. I showed the service advisor and he felt the ridge, but the service manager was on vacation and I would need to talk to the manager to see what to do next. After he came back, I brought the car back up and left it. They said they looked at 3 other equinox in the lot and all felt the same. I checked them and indeed they felt the same. I had them check one of the cars I had test drove, and the difference was amazing. That seat was the comfortable one I was expecting. I let them know that if I had test drove the car I got i never would have bought an Equinox. They are ordering a new seat bottom to see if that fixes the problem.

My question is, did GM change the seat provider? I did test drive several 2012 with driver convienence package and thought they were great, but had to wait several weeks before the color I wanted was availalbe. And all the newer ones I have checked since have this same seat ridge. Anybody else with a newer equinox have the same issue?

I've heard some other people mention this as well but only with the cloth seats, the leather seats feel just fine. I drove 600 miles in one day and I felt no unusual discomfort.

Can you find a seat in the dealer's lot that is comfortable and the same color that the dealer might let you swap ? They may do that to make you a happy customer !

Good luck ! And enjoy the ride.

We have a 2012 LTZ that we took delivery of this past week, and don't have that issue with the driver's seat.

We have a 2012 SLT1 Terrain and it has the same uncomfortable driver's seat. Hopefully GM will recall these
Comfort is in the butt of the beholder. Since it is not a safety issue, why would you expect GM to recall a seat that some people think they are uncomfortable. If you thought the car was ugly (i.e.Aztek) would you expect GM to recall it. Some of things things should have been discovered during your test drive.

It could be a new feature. I am sure there are some that would enjoy sitting on a steel rod.

Shhh, my wife was hoping for this feature, but I told her it was only available on the younger "vehicles".

Like I said, I test drove 8 different Equinox at 5 different dealers, including 2011 and 2012 cloth with convienence package and a 2012 leather LTZ, and none had the issue. But it took about a month for my Mocha AWD to come in after my test drives were done and because of the snowstorm I did not get out for a drive in this car before taking delivery. Now every "new" 2012 cloth I sit in has this issue. I even showed the dealer an older (one I test drove) one that was still on the lot and they tried it and agreed that the newer ones on the lot they looked at have this ridge. They ordered me a new seat cushion but we all think it will come in the same if it's from the same stock.

I really like everything about this car. Getting 23MPG average from an AWD, the stereo is awesome, I like the way it handles, and it is so much quieter than the other manufactures I tried. But if I had test drove in this car I never would have bought an Equinox with my 2.5 hour total daily commute.

At least they ordered you a new seat cushion. Once they get it apart, I am sure they will see what is causing it and will be able to correct it.

I have a similar problem with my Terrain's passenger seat cushion, its like something pokes ya in the rear when you sit in the seat. It never was like that until 14k miles(mind you no one really sits in the pass. seat).

I have taken it to the chevy dealer near my house twice and they will me it's how the seat should feel when they comparred it to the Equinx. and Traverse.
I now have a complaint open with GM and after the specialist tried to reach me twice before thanksgiving I have not heard from her all week. I have left 5 VM for her and no response.
I'm 100% GM, my wife is a FORD family. I fought hard to get this SUV over the stupid Escape.
GM, stop being lame and replace the seat.

Tadd,

I would be happy to look into this for you. Were you able to compare it to a similar Terrain? Please feel free to contact me privately with the last eight of your VIN for further assistance. Thank you.

I think we must have the same GM representative.

My seat pad was replaced. The understructure does have a lack of support in the rear section. My service guy added some extra padding underneath. It's a bit better but still has the same issue, the back section drops down, the middle has a ridge, and the front stays rigid. Apparently this is they way they are now. I guess I should have just bought one of the ones I test drove that had the real comfortable seat instead of ordering to get the color I wanted. At least my dealer gave an honest try. The $20 walmart gel seatpad works wonders though.

I still like everything else about the car. 24MPG in an AWD is great compared to the 14 in my old explorer, great stereo, handles well and much more.
