Brand new 2011 LS AWD Sub wont work..Help please!!

21441 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  gmiemigrad
Hello..I just purchased a 2011 White AWD LS. My sub has a speaker mounted, but I can not get it to work even with Bass prominent music. Can any one help me..Is this a warranty issue? I notice that a statement was made that the "base" sound system does not have a working sub..BUT if true, why is a speaker mounted back there??

Thank you for any help..As a Bass guitar player..I need Bass!

You'll never get any bass out of the "sub" in the LS...it is for the ANC (active noise control) only. You have to upgrade to the Pioneer system to get an actual sub that works with music.

I guess I could buy the JL Stealth Box for $399 which is a direct fit for the sub enclosure..That should kick some great Bass with a 500 watt amp.

Thanks!

Sounds like a good plan, and probably better than the sub I have in my LT2. I don't know how much effect disabling the ANC will have on cabin noise however..

This must be a common question because there is a service bulletin on it

I think this is a question for the 4CYL only according to JL audio. The V6 has no problem at all. I have the 4CYL, can not open the bulletin..could you kindly email it to me?

What it says:

Models: 2010-2011 Chevrolet Equinox
2010-2011 GMC Terrain
This PI was superseded to update model years. Please discard PIT4915.
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this
PI.
Condition/Concern:
Some customer with a 2.4L engine and RPO UW6 which is a 6 speaker system may complain
that their subwoofer is inoperative. On the 2010 Equinox and Terrain with a 4 cylinder engine,
we have a new system called Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). The Active Noise Cancellation
(ANC) system works to reduce the amount of noticeable noise at certain vehicle speeds. The
Active Noise Cancellations works with the vehicle’s audio system to create sound waves that
cancel out torque converter clutch noise. Do not block the cargo area speaker for optimal ANC
performance.
Recommendation/Instructions:
On a vehicle with a 2.4L and RPO UW6 which is a 6 speaker system, the subwoofer is only used
for the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). This speaker is not used to play any audio from the any
of the radio sources.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the
condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need
to be performed.

Thank you for the bulletin..That is a very strange system of noise cancellation using low frequency sound waves that are inaudible to cancel drive train noise issues!
I guess when I install the JL sub with a 500 watt amp kickin the bass, I will accomplish the same noise cancellation as I listen to Led Zep..etc..etc

The V6 is not available in the LS or the SLE-1, which are the models that are also restricted to the 6-speaker (no sub) system. The 1LT comes standard with the 6-speaker system, but you're forced to upgrade to the 8-speaker system if you upgrade to the V6. So, you're totally right, this issue only exists with the 4-cyl.

I would have to agree with the previous posts that this is the Active Noise Cancellation system. Good luck with the new sub! If you have any future questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Thank you.

So then let me get this straight, I have the same problem but I am not sure if I should be haveing it. My 2011 GMC Terrain SLE-2 / 2.4 has the Pioneer speaker system but I dont get any sound out of it. Shouldn't I be getting some bass, or is it also only anc.

So here is what you are up against:

1. When you go to GMC.com and click on SLE-2 and while on that page click on standard equipment...it says this...

* Audio system, AM/FM/XM stereo with CD player Graphic Interface Display (GID), Radio Data System (RDS), auxiliary jack input, speed-compensated volume, USB port receptacle and outside temperature display (STD)

* Audio system feature Pioneer premium 8-speaker system with subwoofer and amplifier

*XM Radio is standard on nearly all 2011 GM models and includes 3 months of trial service. Get over 170 channels, including: commercial-free music, sports, news, talk, entertainment, comedy, family and kids' channels, and much more. With XM's incredible range of programming, everything worth listening to is on XM (Requires a subscription sold separately by XM after the first 90 days. Available only in the 48 contiguous United States and District of Columbia. Visit gm.xmradio.com for details.)

* Bluetooth for phone personal cell phone connectivity to vehicle audio system and HMI (Human Machine Interface)

ect...I think this is where you are thinking you have the Pioneer System...however...
If you continue to build your own...the page after color and rim selection gives you Audio selections and it is on that page where you pick Pioneer over the Standard radio system...

Audio System with CD Player $0
Audio System with Navigation $2,145
Rear Seat Entertainment System $1,295

The Audio System with Navigation has the Pioneer system...so if you don't have Factory Navigation I don't see how the Pioneer system with Sub is standard...but hey...websites can be confusing and since I don't have it, what do I know?

The way to know for sure what you are supposed to have is to check the window sticker...

Also known as the Monroney sticker it is a label required in the United States to be displayed on all new automobiles and includes the listing of certain official information about the car including ALL included equipment.

Each Monroney is unique to the vehicle to which it is attached...and contains the VIN # of the vehicle described to which it is attached.

It is a violation of Federal Law in the U.S. for the sticker to be removed by other than the consumer...however if requested by the consumer the Dealer may remove it as a service but MUST surrender it to the buyer who should keep it for their records.

Removal is a $10,000 fine with jail time...it's a serious matter.

Check your sticker to see if your SLE-2 was built with Pioneer.
But I think you misunderstand the website. IMHO it is NOT a standard SLE-2 feature...

The ordering information is confusing. The SLE-2 does indeed come with the Pioneer system with the subwoofer as standard. Had the same conversation with my dealer salesperson while he was putting the order into the system - it was not clear the difference with the SLE-2 because the radios are the same across all models - it is the speakers that are different. Where you have to look is the standard equipment. The SLE-1 comes with 6 speaker system. The SLE-2, SLT-1 and SLT-2 come with the 8 speaker system (Pioneer premium speaker system which includes subwoofer and amplifier).

Easy way to tell if your vehicle has it - look at the speakers in the front doors - it will say "Pioneer" on them.
