I was reading that some GMC dealerships offer a extended warranty cheaper than other GMC dealers

I have a 2020 Terrain lease, I intend on buying it out in September. I only have 2600mi on it.

My neighbor was able to get a factory extended warranty for his ford from a ford dealership in Ny, I live in Michigan and am trying to figure out how to purchase a extended warranty cheaper that what my dealership wants for.

Has anyone heard of doing this?

Can anyone point me in the right direction, looking for GMC extended factory warranty only.

I would just call a couple different dealerships and compare prices. Make sure you are comparing using same deductible and options (years, mileage etc). Be clear you want GMC only, as dealers do sell 3rd party warranties as well.

I've heard that buying the extended warranty before the manufacturers warranty expires can save a few bucks but have not verified that. Good luck.

The price of the GM warranty is negotiable. Shop around with different dealers. Keep in mind, GM usually requires people purchase an extended warranty before the 3y/36K mile warranty ends (based on the vehicle in service date.)

The warranties are expensive. It may be better to take the couple of thousand dollars you would spend on it, and put it in a rainy day car fund. Then just use that money to pay for repairs instead of buying a warranty you may never use. Your car only has 2600 miles on it. The odds are you would never need to use that expensive warranty. If the vehicle already has had issues, or there are signs it may be developing some, then give it back in September and use the money you would spend on the warranty to buy something else.

When I purchased my 2023 in January, the dealer's office dude offered me a GM extended warranty that was good that day only or I would have to sign off that I declined. I am not that dumb and declined as I already checked around beforehand. Knapp Motors in Michigan is a discounter for GM. I have a Ford F-150 with twin turbos and a 10 speed transmision that I am keeping long term. I did purchase a 100,000 mile coverage from a Ford dealer in Iowa that advertised $50 over their cost. It was a heck of a lot cheaper than other places online. This particular dealer has one dedicated person that only does Ford extended service contracts. They do hundreds of them.

I don't even have a tank of gas burned yet in my new Equinox due to the winter roads yet but I am leaning towards keeping this vehicle long term. With all of the electronics including 360 cameras, lane control, etc., I might consider purchasing coverage. The 1.5T and the 6 speed transmission seem to be well proven, unlike the components in my F-150.

I went with - - - - Genuine Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick extended warranties.
They've been recommended by quite a few on the Corvette and Caddy forums.

I just called Dennis Fichtner at the number below. One call and a couple of emails to get details , verify it was genuine and then fill out the application form. Then i got the printed warranty with GM # on it, VIN, and dates of extended warranty.

Part of the purchasing process was being shuffled to the "finance office," even though I already told the salesman I would not be financing the vehicle from them. He says "I understand but you still will have some paperwork to sign anyway." Pretty quickly I learned that their "finance office" also sold several flavors of extended warranties. It took a fair amount of effort to diplomatically refuse to accept any of the plans that day. I brought home the handful of literature/plans/prices. So then, armed with facts and figures, it was the perfect time to do some internet research on extended warranties in general, and Genuine GM Protection Plans specifically. -comparing apples to apples. WOW, after a few phone calls, it became totally obvious that "extended warranties" are one of the LARGEST PROFIT items for most dealerships. -and for me that does not in any way discredit my local dealer, it is just a hard cold fact of business, especially in a rural market.

Bottom Line: I purchased the identical GM extended warranty from a Chevy Dealer (Smith Chevrolet) in Lowell Indiana for about half the price. As I understand it, in the same time frame, they were still making a good profit by selling hundreds of warranties at a very low mark-up via internet sales, while others were selling only a few. The process did involve my having to send some photos, proof of mileage, and a few other assorted legal tidbits via email attachments.

So, when it came to buy our Equinox in 2020, guess where I purchased the same GM extended warranty ?
Same contract, same documents, same proof of warranty card, etc., and WAY LESS expensive.

Sorry for such a lengthy reply, but I wanted to share the pertinent facts, and hope this helps a lot of other people too !!

I talked to AMT rep today and he said they no longer are issuing a warranty for GMC. They are howev3er still there to take care of existing customers. I have shopping around and did not know how prices could vary so much. I am still looking.

Sorry 57, forgot to answer your question as to who your warranty Authorizer is. From I have learned in the last week is GM uses CNA or Safe -Guard now, they no longer use AMT. I am trying to compare each one. Using the best warranyt they offer, but it is very time consuming, I have not worked my way through. I was told by my dealership a 5 year 56k warranty would start on the day of my lease 2020, so it actually would only be a 2 year warranty. This is using a CNA warranty. I called different dealers that offer Safe Guard & theirs starts at the time I actually buy out the lease & is much cheaper. As I stated, I need to really compare them both. I am however leaning toward Safe Guard.

My dealer sold me a plan on previous vehicles but it appeared to be more of a reimbursement plan as it was not a policy that would automatically be accepted by every GM dealer. Big fear of breaking down on a cross country road trip. I work in the farm equipment business and I don't think any of our extended service plans are actually administered by the manufacturers, but they seem to set up the guidelines for their suppliers and the plans are accepted by all dealers.

Correct 05, They use 3rd party warranties. Dealerships just sell just sell the warranty, each dealer decides who they want, or you can shop around for your own. They have to get the Ok from who ever the Authorizer is, be it CNA or Safe Guard to repair you vehicle. Dealer call calls who ever your warranty is trough & has to see if it is covered.

When I called GM they said it is up to the dealer who they use for a warranty.
I looked at the BBB and CNA had better reviews there than Safe Guard, but other sites say CNA was not any good. Buying a extended protection plan is all like shopping for a car, prices vary from dealer to dealer.

GM will back them if your repair is covered, but GM itself does not sell the warrant from the research. I might sound like I have OCD lol, but I have 6 months left on my lease, so I have the time to call around.
