I have a 2020 GMC Terrain SLT with the 2.0L turbo engine with about 26,000 miles. Over the last 7 days, twice it has happened where when I press the Start button, the engine cranks over for several seconds (3-5 seconds) before starting...
It doesn't happen every time, only twice so far in the last 7 days. All other times, it will start immediately pressing the button.

I haven't gone to a dealership yet, I was just wondering if someone else has experienced this behaviour and what was the cause if you found a solution...

Thanks

Maybe be the battery. Depending on the "born on" date, you could be coming up on 4 yrs of battery life (my '18 Terrain Denali was "born on" 8/5/17). The factory batteries, at least in mine, are rated only as 36 months.

A weakened battery can manifest itself in all sorts of strange and wonderful ways. I've experienced multiple unrelated messages on the DIC. I've even had the LKA become non-functional with a weakened battery. Not saying that this is your problem, but it's worth looking into.

Maybe very early stages of a future Fuel delivery issue?

That said, I think I've seen the same thing with my 2011. From time to time it'll just crank a little longer .. and I still have my original Fuel Pump at 182,300 miles ...

Apparently with only 26,000 miles on it, I am guessing that it might sit a lot or it is only used for short trips? I attached a battery tender cable kit to my battery so that I can plug in a battery tender if the vehicle is going to be sitting for a week or more. I did that with my 2016 Equinox and the battery lasted 6 1/2 years before she started getting weaker but it still cranked it over OK. It was acting the same way as yours with the cranking for several seconds before firing. The new battery allowed a faster start which should have maybe prolonged the starter life.

Thanks... it does actually sit for a week at a time especially during the winter months... I'll try putting my battery tender on it as you suggest, to see if the problem ever reappears...
