Have 2019 Equinox with 2000 miles. Have just noticed a very annoying issue. At an rpm range of 1400 to 1700 and generally at speeds of 20 to 35 mph, car begins to stutter, lurch and buck. Only way I can describe it. If I push rpm up slightly it will stop doing this. Can even be brought on by slowing down from higher speeds for a turn and the engine drops down thru these rpm ranges. Took it in to dealer who was able to recreate the symptom/issue. However, I was given the generic response to what they can not fix .... "that's normal". Not acceptable. This is very annoying when residing in and commuting in an area with 25 to 30 mph limits. Please help me find out if anyone else is having this issue. It just doesn't seem normal to me. It's driving me nuts. Had 2017 Terrain prior and had zero problems. Thanks.

We have a 19' Terrain and it doesn't buck or lurch anywhere in the rpm range or speed range. Your problem is not "normal" IMO. Maybe try a different dealer and hope they will do something for you?

At 1400 rpm, under load, you're probably "lugging" the engine. The engineers have programmed the transmission to shift into the highest gear (within parameters) to maximize fuel economy. I have 2.0 engine and can feel the lugging at 1400 rpm and 60 mph. From the programming paradigm, what you're experiencing is probably "normal", although not optimal for engine performance, longevity, or operating comfort/convenience. From my experience, forcing a downshift to a lower gear makes the problem go away because the engine is then at a more appropriate rpm for the speed (mph). (Personal opinion: Too many engineering decisions are predicated on meeting the mandated Corporate Average Fuel Economy--CAFE--standards.) Good luck with your dealer!

I agree that the transmission shifts to 9th too soon and i can hear the engine laboring a little at the low rpm at 60mph. That being said, I don't get any jerking, bucking or lurching and IMO this is an unacceptable condition. Yes, the car shifts to 9th for better fuel economy too early and that's not good for the engine but it still shouldn't buck and lurch. Mine doesn't. I do run nothing but premium fuel and that may or may not make a difference?

I was thinking maybe his is doing it in a lower gear, at a lower speed, and possible being the cause of the lurching, etc. Granted, his situation is much more extreme than anything I have experienced in 9th at 60 mph. I'm following to see what his outcome is.

This engine, 1.5 turbo, has a 6 speed. The Terrain 1.5 turbo as well as all 2.0 turbos use the 9 speed. I don't believe I am "lugging" the engine. It is moving along well at 25 to 30 mph, but in the 1400 to 1600 rpm range the stuttering and jerking shows up. Pushing down on the gas will bring up the rpms higher, but then of course my speed increases and the local police are brutal where I live. Would like to add that I recently drive on a limited access road with limit of 50 mph. Tach was in the 14 to 16 range and car started the stuttering then, but definitely not as bad or pronounced as it is at low speeds. I appreciate any and all comments on this page. I am sure all of you know how it feels to be told by a new car dealer that it's ok "that is just normal". Thank you.

Are you running regular octane? My ‘17 Malibu 1.4L ran ok on 87, ran better on 89. Just an idea. Or wherever you get your fuel could have poor quality fuel.

Might just need to drive it more for the 6 speed to learn. I had jerkiness and surging on my 1.5 Terrain which is one of many reasons I got rid of it. The 6 speed in my Diesel Equinox is a much better transmission than the 9 speed on my 1.5

I’ve had this post on my mind while driving my 2020. It’s as smooth as butter at 1,100-1,600 rpm at speed and having throttle applied.

I am having the same issue with my 2019 Equinox 2.0 Diesel. I was also given the response of "That's normal" after over a week in the shop. There is absolutely nothing normal about it when the entire front end stutters and you feel it in the floorboard and steering wheel. My Equinox does this at random speeds from 30- 60 mph and RPMs roughly 1200- 1700.

It may be specific to the diesel engine. It's not an issue with the 2.0 gasoline engine. I've found the 9 speed transmission to be very smooth with no harsh shifting at all and no stuttering but again, with the gas engine. I have to wonder why they discontinued the diesel. If I didn't have to tow, I would have got that diesel for the MPG.
