GM Recall #: N182155400
NHTSA # AWAITING #
Date Issued: May 24, 2018

Recall Title: SDM Loss of Communication

Recall Description:

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2018 model-year GMC Terrain vehicles. In these vehicles, the sensing diagnostic module (SDM), which provides crash sensing and deploys airbags in the event of a crash, may not power down correctly when the vehicle is powered off. If this condition occurs, the SDM may be inoperative when the vehicle is restarted. If the SDM is inoperative when the vehicle is started, the airbag warning lamp will be illuminated, the driver information center will display a “service restraint system” message, and warning chimes will sound. If the SDM is inoperative, the SDM will not detect a crash or command deployment of airbags, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Safety Risk Description:

If the SDM is inoperative, the SDM will not detect a crash or command deployment of airbags, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Repair Description:

Dealers will reprogram the SDM with updated software.
I logged into My GMC this morning to renew our internet package for a road trip and had this alert in there. Looks like it was issued yesterday.

My Terrain has been sitting at the dealer for over a month with this exact issue. "Service Restraint System" trouble indicator. I have a whole THREAD about it. There's been a TSB out for issue for a while now as well. Great to see GM actually identifies it as a recall finally! Hope this means there's a fix available now. The REALLY troubling part is that the dealer insisted the restraint system would still deploy even with this SW fault according to GM. Clearly the recall says otherwise.

This is on my portal view this morning:

Did you explore your state’s “lemon law” because your new vehicle has been out-of-service for more than a month?

I’ve gone through two GM new car buy-backs (repurchases) under my state’s lemon law.
