Tonight I had the sunroof open and when I closed it moved very very slowly. Once closed I thought I would open it and close again to see if the issue repeated. Now the sunroof will not open at all? Any one else with the issue? It's Friday night so it will be Monday before I can bring it to the dealer.

I had a 2010 terrain that I traded for this Nox.. And I had a lemon.. Every thing that could go wrong did.. Two rear mainseal blow outs, timing belt, fuel pump, computer, throttle body and finally the tranny blown at 159k.. I hope this is not the start of problem on my new vehicle.

I've only had the equinox for 24 days.

Was the engine running when you closed it or were you just running off the battery?
Possible low battery problem, not enough information
If you have a volt meter you can quick check your battery/alt.
More than that I would see the dealer.

The engine is running at the time of the failure. I was able to recreate the issue again this morning. I was able to open the sunroof then while shutting it closed slowly. I was able to do this three times before the sunroof would no longer open. On the final cycle I paused half closed and tried to open again and it would not go back but I was still able to close it fully. I did stop at the dealership this am, the service dept. is open Saturday mornings for oil changes and such so I stopped to book an appointment. Alas the earliest they had for electrical is next Thursday so I won't have answers until then. I will circle back and update you all. Searching online I only found one other comment on another message board with a person having the same issue.. But they never circled back to give a resolution.

Just frustrating as the vehicle is a month old, hoping for a quick easy fix for Chevrolet.

I took a video of the issue last night on my phone, although I don't think I am able to upload it to the forum? I wanted to be able to show the service advisor/tech tomorrow as my experience with issue like this is that after dropping off the car you get the phone call stating that they "cannot duplicate the failure".

Update 8/31. Not horribly impressed with the dealership. Dropped off my car at 7:15 this morning, at 3:00PM I phoned them to find out what is happening as I hadn't received a phone call yet. I was told that they have not looked at my vehicle as their electrical guy has been busy. They are sending their shuttle to pick me up to bring me to a rental outfit to give me a loaner.

I'll update again tomorrow.

Wanted to add that Im not impressed with the loaner either, beggars shouldn't be choosers but I have the top tier Equinox Premier that is loaded and nice and new and shiny and a month old and they gave me a old 2016 Trax with 60,000kms on it that is absolutely filthy inside and out. One would hope for something similar to what is in the shop.

When I had issues with my terrain I either got a nice new terrain to drive while it was in for work or I was even given Cadillacs for the amount of times I've been in.

I'll be discussing this with the service manager.

Update 9/1

Got the call this morning that the car was ready. Picked it up this afternoon and was told that the tech reset the sunroof module and it was working per spec. I drove 5 minutes to pick up my kids, opened the sunroof and closed it.. Upon trying to reopen it would not work.

Drove back to the dealership and the service advisor came out to verify then she retrieved the shop foreman to witness and verify the failure.

I am booked in to bring the car back next Wednesday.More inconvenience on a month old vehicle sadly.

I will update again next Wednesday.

Should also note when I dropped off the car yesterday it was sparkling clean, today when I picked it up it is coated in ash from forest fires in BC. They should have quickly hosed it down. Just disappointing that I drop of a clean car and pick up a dirty one.

Well..Winter is around the corner and I could really use a set of weather tech floor liners... I'm going to angle to get a set of those for a good price (ie. free) for my troubles. Ha! Wish me luck!

Update September 6, 2017:

So I am a bit closer to resolution but not totally there.

I dropped off the car this morning and was told the specialist was in today so my car would be properly dealt with.

I am told that within the motor of the sunroof there is a sensor that stops the roof if it senses an object in the way (ie. your arm) and stops the roof from moving. The good news is they have determined this is failing and needs to be replaced. The bad news is that the part has to come from the states and will not arrive for 7-10 days.

Unfortunately this means I need to bring the vehicle back for a third time to have the issue actually repaired.

I'm glad they know what is wrong and are able to fix it, annoyed that this is causing me a great deal of inconvenience.

I will update again in 7-10 days.

Two axioms :

"Never" say never.

and never say "they know what is wrong and are able to fix it" - Until they have fixed it !

LOL - Good luck !

A classic example of poor customer service - especially for a customer that bought a new vehicle.

Good luck - I wish you the best.

Thanks! That's my biggest gripe. Its a new model year, gremlins are sure to be found and I'm ok with that. I'm not ok with the fact that I had the car for a month when I found the issue and then from the time I made the first appointment at the dealership to the time it is fixed will be ~a month.. and I'll have had to go back three times.

When I get my GM Satisfaction Survey I'll be sure to be brutally honest.

At least I hope with my experience it may help others in the future. Perhaps dealers will carry the part if it is a common failure and the factory may use a different one to avoid issues on new production.

September 19, 2017 Update:

Received a call this AM from the service advisor that the part has arrived. I am booked Friday AM to have it installed. I will update Friday evening with the result.

I received a separate call this afternoon from the dealership to ask me if the issue with my sunroof has been resolved. I told the caller that no, it has not but I am booked Friday to have it completed. I noted that this will be the third time into the dealership to have the work done. I did complete the email survey from my first visit and as much as they would have wanted me to fill it out completely satisfied I had to be honest and note that there were things I was not satisfied with. I'm sure I will face some backlash from the dealership for answering the way I did but I was honest.. they kept the car overnight and gave me an old ratty POS rental to drive, then when it was returned it still didn't work.. and my car was dirty.. I has washed and waxed a couple days earlier and they left it outside to get covered in ash from the local forest fires.

September 22nd Update :

Still not fixed!!! Shop replaced the sunroof motor and released the vehicle to me as operating. I drove home and attempted to cycle the sunroof..on the third cycle it froze closed again. I called the dealership and I am bringing it back Tuesday.

While its not a major issue that affects the operation of the vehicle.. it should work.

This will now be my 4th time returning to the dealership for the same problem.

I'm going to call GM customer care as well to make them aware of this issue. There needs to be some reparations for this.

The notes on the repair form read as below as this may come in handy in the future for people having the same issue:

Sunroof motor stopped working - suspect thermal protection in sunroof motor causing issue. Ordered part USA. Replace Sunroof motor. (7073 internal fault)

Sept 26 2017 Update

So after 4 visits I'm told this is normal for the 2018. It has thermal protection to protect the sunroof from overheating if it is cycled too frequently.

My frustration is I am told this is in the tech service manual. If this is the case why was this not the first diagnosis. Why did it take 4 vists over the timeframe of a month and the install of a new sunroof motor that was not needed.

I didn't even get a simple "sorry we wasted your time."

I've attached a snap of the paperwork showing the comments.

Im debating if I should write the service manager or go back to GM customer care. I know its not an end of the world situation but man it makes me mad I wasted so much time at the dealership.

(I have no idea why the picture is uploading upside down)

Ah, yes, the old "that's not a bug -- it's a feature" response. Usually it's "burning a quart per 1,000 miles is normal" or "all Equinoxes have that flapping roof sound."

I’m having a similar issue with my one week old GMC terrain Denail. Except the sunshade move a little bit and the sunroof will not open at all I will be sharing your information with my service advisor wish me luck. in my case the sunroof never worked great since I got it, might be the switch or something, never worked as the manual says. The manual states I should be able to push hard on the button and have an open fully the same for the sunscreen shade. You the think they Would have tested all this at the factory.
