I just purchased a 2014 Terrain, have had it for literally 24 hours. I am coming from a pretty beat 2005 chevy cobalt so its one **** of an upgrade. During the test drive if I went to apply the break during the slow down you could almost feel the car down shift? is the best way I could describe it, almost like a small hicup while breaking, Couldnt feel it while in passenger but as driver most definitely could.

Its not anything severe, it may not even be anything bad Ive just been driving a older car for so long that new car features may just not feel right to me. I asked the car dealership service during my test drive is this was intentional and he said newer 4 cylinder do that nowadays which I have no experience or knowledge to dispute.

Can anyone else confirm they relate to what Im talking about? Im getting ready to go back to the dealer ship and test drive an identical car just to see if it also does the same thing so I can have peace of mind it isnt a defect in my newly purchased vehicle.

I never felt that sensation with my '10 4 cyl. I like your idea of comparing with a similar vehicle.

I've got a 2014 Terrain 3.6L AWD & mine feels the same way. When I apply the brakes, as coming up to a stop light. It feels like it's downshifting as well. I like it. I apply the same amount of light pressure, and it is a very smooth stop. Don't seem to have to keep applying more pressure. Welcome to the "Terrain" world.

Chevrolet appears to program the auto trans to downshift when going downhill or when decelerating. In overdrive gears there is very little, if any, compression braking available during deceleration. My opinion--this is the engineer's way of giving some compression braking back.

I wonder if this could be the fuel injectors shutting off? They do this while slowing under certain conditions seems like. Older cars were more consistent in this, newer ones seem to do it only sometimes.

In my 2014 Malibu it was the trans downshifting; I could see the engine rpm increase in a corresponding fashion.

Same issue (And just bought it myself)
Gave me a bit of a fright that it might be the transmission, but after a few days of research, seems it's a trait of the vehicle, never happens in manual mode, and if I apply even braking it doesn't happen. :D

Different issue but something to look out for

Different issue but something to look out for. Cruise about 30-40 mph, let go of the gas (make sure you are on an empty street with no traffic behind you) and tap the brake quickly with the tip of your toe. i.e. just fast enough to be a quick tap but not hard enough to be like you are slamming the brakes. think brake checking or if someone cuts you off so you want to slow down quickly but not stop.

you might find that your car slams on the brakes when in most other cars, if not all, would not do that. Here is my thread so you can see if yours exhibits this. If it does, I would love to hear from you so you can report it to the NHTSA and GM as a safety concern since they have ignored me so far.

Hmm. . bought my 2015 Equinox LTZ new 3 years ago and it exhibits No such braking behavior. I have tried to make it do what you say numerous times. Nada.

Your thread is hardly conclusive that it is a wide spread or major defect. You might want to be careful in forum accusations. Crusaders and individuals are now getting sued for defamation and slander for unfounded posting allegations.

Making a formal complaint yourself is prudent and will be more productive.

Thanks for looking out.

Only thing I have posted are the facts at hand.

I have reported it to the NHTSA, consumer reports, and any organization that will listen, have video proof of the action and can easily recreate it at any time. Of course none of it has amounted to anything. I always state that GM says it is normal and that in my opinion it is not normal nor safe.

It is difficult to trigger if you are not familiar with it, and I may not be explaining it in a way that translates well over a forum. Also, it might not apply to every terrain, but I know it would be a mighty coinsicence that the very first used terrain I drove besides mine at the dealer had the same issue as experienced by me and the service manager (which is documented in writing on service documents)

That doesn't mean they won't sue of course.

It is well documented on my end, with their paper work showing that it is happening and they are accepting it as normal behavior.

All I want is a repair so I feel safe in my vehicle.

The video below (links to twitter) will show what it is doing.

Unfortunately it is not a very exciting watch, because you are not in the vehicle. But if you watch the nose, it dips significantly and then stops (when I let go of the brake). it went into a full panic stop mode even though I did not slam the brakes.

Hopefully it will not cause an accident. On a day to day basis, it is just an annoyance, not something I can't handle, it will only be an issue in a case where there is someone riding too closely behind me and rear ends me.

It could be a broken timing belt.
"Chain"?
Damaged Valves from broken (or slipped) Timing Chain?

Cylinder(s) can't build pressure if Valves don't close when they're supposed to (or they're damaged).

Who told you that it has no compression? Did it stop running or cranking (the term you used) When ours stopped cranking it was the starter.
