The local GMC Dealer where I will probably get a Terrain has a great sales team but a less than stellar reputation in the Service Dept.

I am wondering what the nuances of the Terrain Warranty will be as regards whether -

All servicing [oil, pads etc] has to be done at the selling dealer?
or
can be done at any GMC dealer?

Is Warranty for say, a failed water pump, invalidated if you have had vehicle serviced [oil, pads etc], at local excellent garage , [not a GMC dealer?]

Thanks

Service can be done any place. If GM can prove that servcie done by you, or someone else caused a warranty issue, then they can avoid paying for a warrantry repair, but they would need to be able to prove it. i.e. if you put an aftermarket oil-type air cleaner that ruins the MAF Sensor because of the extra oil-spray. then they could balk on covering a replacement MAF Sensor. That is what my dealer told me.

Not only any GMC dealer, but also any Chevy dealer as well. Under the skin the Terrain and Equinox are identical.....the SRX isn't quite identical, but could still be serviced at any GM dealership that isn't Cadillac.

Be sure to keep records of your servicing, even if it is done at the dealer. You always want to be able to prove when and where the servicing was done.

Personally I am changing my own oil every 5k miles (we live in a hilly area in the blue ridge mountains so I dont follow the oil life meter... plus 5k intervals are really easy to remember). Every 25k I will take it into the dealer to get it a complete servicing of whatever is reccomended by the owners manual. I think 50k is the tranny fluid change for harsh use.

Per Magnason-Moss Warranty Act

Tie-In Sales" Provisions
Generally, tie-in sales provisions are not allowed. Such a provision would require a purchaser of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive a remedy under the warranty. The following are examples of prohibited tie-in sales provisions.

In order to keep your new Plenum Brand Vacuum Cleaner warranty in effect, you must use genuine Plenum Brand Filter Bags. Failure to have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Great American Maintenance Company, Inc., voids this warranty.

The same problem we encountered on chevy dealer. When we had our water pump repair. They said that warranty is already void due to some reason,(I already forgot the reason he said)

They can not deny warranty claims because you get your regular maintenance and work done someplace else. Just doesnt work like that.

I take my Pontiac to a dealer that has never been a Pontiac dealer but they sell GMC/Cadillac/Buick. As long as its a GM dealer, you are good to go.

I agree with the previous post. You can take the vehicle to any GM dealership for service. However I would recommend contacting them before hand to be sure that they have the tools and the training necessary to complete the warranty work. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me directly. Thank you.
