We are the original owners of this 2012 terrain purchased new in 2011 and the engine lost all power. This is most likely due to the piston ring failure loosing so much oil all the time although I need to pay $2500 to find out more.
I'm looking for advice; Pay the $2500 to prove this the problem or just replace the engine for $10,000?
bluebook for this car is about $6000.
I might get more back if I just sell off the parts....but don't know how to go about that.
But even on the Traverse forum- when the v6 engine was replaced- it was more in the $6000 range.
Search for some threads-- some folks on here have found low mileage 4 cyl engines from newer wrecked vehicles. I think 2015-2017 models... and they got their vehicles back on the road. their posts saw what needed to be swapped over.
The first step is to get the vehicle professionaly diagnosed by a dealer or independent mechanical shop.
Pistons and rings may be the problem but you need to know for sure.
GM has an extended warranty depending on date in service and miles so check that out.
Do NOT put $10,000 in a vehicle that books for $6,000.
Run it thru an auto auction as is or contact a local wrecking yard are some options.
4 CYL ENGINE #19300255 NT7 AND NU5 EMISSIONS $7151.00
6 CYL ENGINE #12679104 $8991.00
These are Canadian GM List prices
so US $ would be $4872. $5386. $6772.
Not sure anyone would be charged list prices ??? No labor included in any prices ..................
