Thank you for your service.


Ours broke at 77k miles while driving resulting on a destroyed engine. Will be paying $5200 for an used (50k miles) engine, no GMC dealers were close to where the car broke down so the local shop is taking care of it.

What would the extended warranty be? Is it the 5yr/100000? I think my 2012 is having these issues and we are over the 5yr mark, but I'm only at 60,000.

When a warranty is stated as 5yr/100,000 miles it means 5yrs OR 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The 2019's are now out so your 2012 is probably past the 5 year limit.
This depends on what day the dealer put your vehicle "in service".
You can check with the dealer to be sure.

You can also call GMC or Chevrolet, given them your VIN # and they'll tell you what date your vehicle was "put into service". If it wasn't a dealer "loaner" or "demo" or "service" vehicle, it was 'put into service' the day it was sold to its first owner.

I've seen 2-year old 'brand new' cars sitting on dealer lots still not 'put into service'.

So a 2012 could *possibly* hang around on a dealer lot until 2014, never be 'put into service' by the dealer (to be a "loaner", "demo", or "service" vehicle), and then *finally* sold to its first owner in 2014, starting the warranty clock at that point.

OMG it's a true freaking nightmare for sure! Same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago on my way home from a Dr appointment at the VA in Cheyenne Wyoming. I was at a stop light getting ready to turn onto the interstate and my car just shut down on me. I have a '12 Terrain, have faithfully changed my oil every time it was time to and 90% of Jezebel's miles were highway. She wasn't knocking, no lights on, nothing just shut down as if I had turned of the key. Shop broke the news two days later that she jumped out of time and all the lifters were bent and pistons were screwed. 128k on her and I had just paid her off in Feb. Don't think I'm not pissed off, I can't afford to pay for for a new engine, I live on VA disability.

Very sorry to hear about your bad luck. Let us know what model Toyota you decide to buy, pls.

So I take it in stride since I am a soldier and we're supposed to overcome and adapt to adversities. So I say thanks to the gentleman who sold me my car who suggested that I asked the service department if they could check around to see if they could find a replacement engine at a cheaper cost. The service department did do that and gave to cost estimates verbally for my engine replacement. The prices I received were $5200.00 for a new engine and $4900.00 for a used engine. So I told them that will have my car towed back to my home until I can come up with a way to pay for the repairs. So my vehicle was towed to my house and dropped off. Before the tow truck driver left we open the hood of my vehicle an to my dismay we found that who ever last work on my vehicle just tossed everything under my hood oil cap, sparkplugs, screws and engine parts. My first thought was that my dealership who I purchased my car from and referred a few of my friends too in which one of my friends did purchase a vehicle from my dealership didn't give a crap about me as a customer. I did put in all in a bag shake it up and now I am moving forward. I have taken my car back to my dealership for the engine replacement I have also spoken to the service manager from my dealership who in turn said he would talk to GM to see if they could help. I am a person who doesn't hold a grudge . I would like to hear from anyone in our forum regarding my situation. I would also like to know if anyone else timing chain has broken and caused so much damages to your engine that you had to have you engine replaced. I also hope there is someone from our GMC company on this forum who may read this post. I asked this question due to the fact that if this happened to me where my timing chain broke and ruined my engine I am sure it will happen to someone else who owns any of your GMC brand vehicles with timing chains. I also hope you will cover your customers six like my buddies have covered my six. This SSG J sign out and looking forward to hearing your feed back.
I had my 2012 GMC Terrian Timing Chain replaced at 71k and now at 97k they say I need another one.

Did you know......??
That IF you drive your equinox when you have low engine oil
The result is you will need a new timing chain...
... or worse, a new engine.

Sadly, All GDI engines, the engines in these equinox's....
The GDI engines in Honda, Ford, Toyota, BMW...
will all eventually burn oil.
For that reason ^^^ you should check your oil levels at least every 1000 miles
And then more often as soon as oil consumption is detected.
But,
most folks are spoiled by port injected gasoline engines, where we never had to check engine oil levels,
so folks do not know that every other fill up, one needs to check oil levels in these gasoline direct injection (gdi) engines.

Since the cause of oil consumption in GDI engines is carbon build up on intake valves, BMW requires the extra maintenance of "walnut blasting" of the intake valves,
that is, the periodic cleaning of intake valves to remove the carbon build up.....

Simply speaking, all you have to do,
is check your engine oil level, using the engine oil dip stick
And
never drive with low oil,
and your timing chains will not be an issue....
