Check engine light - gas cap issues - purge solenoid issue - Anyone else?

I have a 2012 I4 Terrain and have been dealing with some minor yet annoying problems. I'm wondering if anyone else is having (had) issues with their Terrains.

A little background. Around January 10th, my check engine light came on. After calling the dealer and them telling me to remove my gas cap and re-install it, then to wait for 4 days for it to reset, I did just that. 4 days later my check engine light is still on. I called the dealer and set up an appointment. After an hour at the dealer they stated the gas cap wasn't sealing properly which was throwing code: P0442. They replaced the gas cap and cleared the code. Mind you this is at 10,500 miles.

First week in March the check engine light came back on. I immediately removed and re-installed the gas cap then waiting for 4 days. On the 4th day I was notified on my DIC that I need to check my gas cap. (this didn't happen the first time). So I removed and re-installed it again. A couple days later it was still on and I called the dealer again. Dropped it off at the dealer on a Saturday and was called about 2 hours later stating that it was the purge solenoid and code: P0442. They replaced the purge solenoid and reset the code.

Guess what? 2 weeks later (about 400 miles) the check engine light came on again. Thoroughly frustrated, I called the dealer and set up an appointment. Dropped it off the night before and got a call mid-day the next day. They stated they read a code: P0455 with a large evap leak. Did a smoke test and found the gas cap was the cause. They replaced the gas cap and re-ran the smoke test. It completed successfully and they cleared the code.

Let me remind you that I've never owned an American car until my Terrain. I've always had honda's and subarus. I've never had a brand new car until this, however all my older cars never had as many problems even with over 100K miles.

Has anyone else dealt with these issues? Every time I got the code I had not filled my car up in a week or more. I would think that the code would appear right after a fill-up if the cap wasn't sealing properly. Is there something else that could be screwed up? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Peter

Hello Peter, Gary here. I have a '12 Terrain and have had no issues. I've never owned an import vehicle, but work on them all day and drive them regularly. You have a minor glitch, a bad cap, sensor or a slight leak in the system. It fortunately sounds like something that will show itself, and will be a passing irritation. Many conditions will throw a code with a check engine lite but your dealership will locate it. Best of luck!

Gary, I appreciate your feedback. I'm a car guy that doesn't have enough time to work on my own cars anymore. Hence why I bought new. It's just very frustrating to have a new car have more problems than the last car I bought for $3000. Maintenance aside of course. The dealer has been accommodating and it's nice to have the warranty... it's just a pain - a hassle of sorts. Especially within a short amount of time.

On a side note, my boss owns a Porsche Cayenne. He dealt with the same issues when he first bought it. They ended up having to replace the whole fuel system in order to correct the issue. I'm hoping this will not be the case with my Terrain.

This stuff happens. Car no matter if they are American brand or Imports have one now and then with an issue. If anything the American cars are better now than ever and the imports have fallen off to the point it is a toss up on either. My buddy make a good living fixing Honda's to the point he owns his own plane and my father was always dropping off his buddy from work at the Toyota dealer because something was always wrong.

I had a similar issue on my 04 GTP and it was the relief valve on the carbon canister in the rear that was the problem. The dirt from under the car plugged it up and the valve stuck open. Not a big deal to fix but a bugger to find till I found it.

Most of these cars are all using similar systems and all see the same problems from time to time.

At least the emissions has a long warranty and most of this is covered if the needs comes up.

Odds are it is a purge valve, or Carbon Canister valve since you replaced the cap. These are the most common issues unless the line was damaged from something hitting it from the road. That also happens. Outside of that not much else could go wrong.

Do you have a different dealer nearby? Might be worth your while to try another one. While a gas cap could cause either P0442, or P0455, it's unlikely it would fail again so soon after replacement. I'm thinking you might have a lazy tech/dealer that's just throwing a part at your truck to get it out. Believe me I've worked st plenty of dealers with plenty of these "techs". Any good tech with a smoke machine should be able to diagnose this in under an hour in most cases. I wouldn't hate on the truck, or American cars in general over this though, evap leak codes are the most common cause of check engine lights in my shop, both foreign and domestic.

I've seen such issues before on vehicles when the driver fills up the fuel tank all the way to the brim... keeps trying to get that very last drop off. All it does is soak the evap cannister and cause multiple evap system failures.

I'm not saying you're doing this, but I have seen it before.

Re: Check engine light - gas cap issues - purge solenoid issue - Anyone else?

Hyperv6 - I love my terrain. It's the best fitting, most economical car I've ever had. I'm a tall guy and don't fit in most foreign cars and don't want to pay for the high price tag and repairs on German vehicles. That said, I was more comparing my troubles with a car that I paid 3k for versus a new price tag. I also understand that cars and technology have changed dramatically over the last 10 years. More electronics, more problems!

I know it's just a nuisance and probably something that can and hopefully will be fixed easily. I'm lucky that I have a warranty and that the dealer I purchased it from has been accommodating thus far. It's more of a hassle than anything else. Now that I know more people have not had gas cap issues, then I'll be more determined to find a different cause if it happens again.

I may take it to another dealer. I have a buddy that works at a different GMC dealer and may get him to look at it if it throws a code again.

Re: Check engine light - gas cap issues - purge solenoid issue - Anyone else?

I did have a gas cap issue. My check engine light never came on, but I noticed that the cap wasn't sealing properly. I got it replaced under warranty and never had an issue since. Sounds like you have had some bad luck. For what it's worth, I've actually had more problems with foreign cars than American ones....luck of the draw i guess.

Just curious - How did you know that you had a problem without the check engine coming on ? Did you smell gas in the "rear" of your car ? LOL But seriously, how did you know ?
