Tow plug activation

Has anyone had the dealer activate the factory tow plug which sits near the spare tire. I have the harness that plugs into the tow plug and terminates with the standard 4 pin connector. I believe the dealer needs to signal the onboard computer through the OBD port to send juice to the tow plug. We installed our hitch (very easy) so this Equinox did not have a factory package. What was the dealer charge?

I installed factory hitch and factory wiring harness and the trailer lite right up didn't have to take it to the dealer. Check your under hood BEC and see if there are fuses located in it for the trailer hitch

Had to go with the 18 XT5

Re: Tow plug activation

I bought the kit that taps into the rear lights.
very easy install.
It does not splice into the wiring---- instead you use the tailights connectors and the kit has its own--- neat way to make the connections.

I like the OEM because it comes thru the floorboard in a grommet and attaches right on the hitch.

I'm curious - you happen to have a pic of this? (Though probably inconvenient to get to?)
I was planning to use the same approach rbarrios mentioned, but... hope you can share a pic? Or a diagram?

*Disclaimer: I'm only sharing my opinion. You didn't pay for it, so my opinion is only worth that much, haha.<br />2013 GMC Terrain SLT-1, FWD, 3.6 V6 (LFX), Sunroof

Factory wiring is really 2 harnesses one from inside vehicle to a point on the factory receiver and a second one from there to the 4 wire connector If you want a picture from inside the vehicle I'm sorry but it's really cold around here and I'd have to take out the spare tire for you to see where it goes thru the floor. Myself, I just like the factory hitch package better than what else is out there. In another of my postings I posted a pic of my invoice for all the parts for the hitch from www.gmpartsnow.com total was around 250 dollars american

Re: Tow plug activation

yeah- the factory connection looks nice.

Though I went with the aftermarket and simply wrapped the wiring in electrical tape. zipped tied it to the aftermarket hitch- and then converted the 4 pin plug to 7 pin... (My cargo rack is used on my 2010 Traverse and 2003 Trailblazers with the factory 7 pins)...

Re: Tow plug activation

My OEM factory harness running light wire developed an internal break while I was on the road at night. My trailer lights went dark, the turn and brake lights still worked. I ran a jumper wire from the left taillamp running lamp wire to just before the 4 wire plug and jumped the bad section of harness. I still haven't taken it to the dealer, I may not.

Re: Tow plug activation

Curt hitches understands wiring a lot of the others don't. Curt setup is a breeze.
