Chrome exhaust tips

Boy these chrome dual exhaust tips sure looked nice at the dealership but in the real world they are impossible to keep clean, even a short drive results in black carbon on them. It's easy to wipe off but a PITB. I'm considering painting mine flat black to avoid the problem. Has anyone else done this? Will high temp black paint stick to the chrome?

I’ve never wiped my dual exhaust pipes a single time. They’re black because of it.

What’s the difference between that and black paint?

The Black Soot Comes From Engine Exhaust. (You Never Mentioned How Many Miles You Have/Highway Driving. Mine Always Stay Clean. Just a "Little" Black Soot That Can Be Easily Wiped Out With a Paper Wet Towel. But, I Use the "Top Tier" Fuel That Owner's Manual Suggest & Put the Correct Amount of Fuel Injector Cleaner in Fuel Tank @ Shortly After Oil Change Time, When We're Going on a Road Trip That Uses a Full Tank of Gas. "Top Tier" Fuel Has More Detergents in it to Keep Injectors Clean on Single Point Fuel Injections. Put Bottle of Fuel Injector Cleaner & Drive on Highway 100 mi. or So. Top Tier Fuel is Sold @ BP under the Name of Invigorate & You Can Get it in All Grades. If You Don't Use Top Tier Fuel (Only 4 Cents More) You Are Getting the "Minimum" Detergent in Fuel Required by Law. Every Fuel Co. Calls Them By Different. Names. Note: Alway Include Your Make, Model, & Year AND Engine Size. This Helps Us "All" Out & Better Decipher Your Problems.

Good Luckl!!

Mine had been developing some smudge marks between washes, so it will be interesting to see how they hold up now that I've put a Ceramic coating on it. I don't have a picture of the back, but I did take this one of the Terrain and Colorado side by side. The one thing I can say is there is a lot of chrome on the Denali, but is sure looks good once polished and coated.

Ours is a 19' Denali.. 2.0 Engine.. Always top tier gasoline (usually mobil and always premium). The car has 3,850mi. on it and I put a bottle of techron concentrate in the tank after the first oil change which was done with Dexos synthetic at 3,000mi. Most of our driving is shorter trips, less than 10mi.. We did drive it about 80mi.(40mi. each way) today and I noticed less soot than what the chrome tips usually have on them so perhaps it's short trip related. It's still a PITB to keep them clean and I understand this is somewhat inherent to having DI.... The only engine that has dual chrome tips is the 2.0 so I assumed which engine I had would be obvious. I'm not 100% sold on the techron being of any value after researching but I'll continue to throw a bottle in the tank at each oil change (which I plan to do at 5,000mi. intervals)

I prefer using 100% pure gas, which is easy access & affordable in my agricultural area.

2008 HHR Panel 2LT, purchased Aug 28, '09 to date. Great lil ride.

Currently studying the Gen 1 Terrain for a possible next ride.

I don’t know. I’ll have to check it (now). LOL!

This is a purely cosmetic thing, right?

I’ve never heard of any “performance penalty” for riding with a sooty tailpipe, but someone enlighten me if I missed that memo...

And for the record, always “Bottom Tier” gas here (LOL)! Always 87 octane, always off-brand, generic gas, lowest price ... over 30 years of this now in all my vehicles.

But my Nox is the 1st DI-Engine. Will I make it to my usual 222,222 miles with this same regimen?? Stay tuned! Closing in on 137,000 miles so far ...

...

If you have the square chrome exhaust tips it hard to believe you have not noticed if they are completely black on the outside.

I've had the same chrome tips on my 2008 with 3.6 and 2018 with 2.0 and it's not difficult to clean off the lower edge of the tip.
I never notice any soot on the sides or top of the tips.
