Under hood light

Is there supposed to be an under hood light on the 2014 Terrain SLT1? If not, wow, what a way to cut corners to save a few manufacturing bucks.
So what can I do to get lights under the hood? Anything aftermarket available?

I can't remember that last car that I had that came with an underhood light.

But, I am sure that you can find something on EBay.

Re: Under hood light

I too have not seen an underhood lamp- on a car in years..............im talking at least 25 yrs.

The last time I installed one--- actually several.............

it was on a
1964 Chevy truck (installed 2)
1964 Ford Fairlane Wagon (installed 2)
1970 Monte Carlo.

My 1970s stopped working- so I went to the junkyard- and found some similar units- just on newer cars-- 80's I think.
My neighbor with a 64 liked the lights- so we put some on his too.
At car shows-- you know at burger joints--- it was nice to see the chrome with the help of the lights.

Im pretty sure these had mercury switches-- because they came on- when the hood was at a certain angle-- and you could adjust it- by bending the tab.

according to this auction- it is a mercury switch....

though this one has an updated connector.

this is more like what Id get off the junkyard cars..
being CAlifornia cars... a little bit of brasso and the lamps were good as shiny new.
(ALWAYS install a fuse).

Re: Under hood light

This light came from the factory on my 1990 GMC Jimmy SLE.
Best light ever on all the vehicles I have owned.
Light pulls out with about 20 ft of wire and a magnetic base, good for changing flats.

Re: Under hood light

Well that's puzzling. I don't think they would cost a manufacturer 3 bucks each. I didn't look under the hood for the light, just assumed it was there. All my previous vehicles had them. They were older models but not ancient. Why wouldn't you need an under hood light unless you take your vehicle to the shop for fluid checks, etc. I like to see what I am doing.
I did check Ebay and Amazon. Both have a nice 30 LED strip installation kit for a decent price. Probably will do that. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Under hood light

I kind of like the Harbor Freight magnetic LED lights, and they used to be free with any purchase. I must have a dozen of them - along with the free scissors, Digital Voltmeters, tape measures, and on and on !

Re: Under hood light

I think *maybe* my 1990 Taurus had a light under the hood. That's it though. I don't really miss it either. It had it's purposes, but it never stopped me from needing a real flashlight anyways.

If you are willing to do your own wiring, the sky is the limit. You can walk into any auto parts store and find some kind of LED lights for $10. You can get LED "fog" lights for about $10. Or go hog wild and light up the whole engine bay for $9
