2012 UEW Nav radio dead. Looking for options and info.

Hello,

I have a 2012 Terrain with the UEW (GM 22879332) nav radio (non Intellilink) that shat the bed. At first it was doing the funky stuff on the screen like missing icons until you scrolled over or touched them, then they would appear type stuff. Once in awhile going black, then back to normal, then back to funky icon stuff. A few days ago it went all black. No response. Control panel lights still work and HVAC functions still work...etc. When the power button is pressed I can hear the speakers go live with no noise, but an indication they've been powered on if you will, then off, then repeat about 5 times before it gives up. Open a door, press the power buttun...etc it will cycle like this as I assume the BCM is trying to power it up to get at least the basic "GMC" start screen up. I loaded a random disc into it to see if it will feed in, which it does, and it spins a few rotations when the speaker cycle thing happens, then nothing. I suppose I should also mention I got a random message while screwing with it before it died about an over the air update (which I thought was only for Intellilink). I accepted but it said it failed at 97%. After that it continued its wonkyness until it went all black permanently.

At this point I am assuming this expensive unit is a brick. I assume the screen still functions. Instead of buying an outrageous $900+ new unit from the online GM parts dealers (especially since this radio was an option we already paid big money for back in late 2012 ), I'm looking for alternatives. I am aware that if I buy a used UEW unit I will have to have a dealer sync it with the BCM (for $125 or so). Here are my questions:

-Are all UEWs compatible? I found one on the net with a different GM P/N but still a UEW unit (out of an Equinox)
-Is there another component to this system or is it just radio + screen with feedback from BCM?
-Could I put a 2015 Intellilink in instead of a replacement UEW? Will the plugs all match and communicate with the factory wiring?
-Is there any other alternative to a replacement radio that still uses the factory bluetooth phone and back-up camera thats NOT another Bosch POS that will probably die in 2.5 years like this one did?
-Is there a way or guide on how to bench test the radio/screen to diagnose it? I have it all torn down with the radio unit sitting on the desk as I type this.
-Anything else I should know about the system and my options?

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thank you.

I assume you beyond the 3 year 36K mile warranty? If you had issues before that you might still get it repaired if it had a history of problems.

This is one reason I opt for the GMPP extended warranty on cars like ours with so much tech on them.

Rather than preach to you wooda, couda, shouda, there is a member Jonesy who stated in his profile that he is an electrician tech that works on all equipment. You might want to PM your problem to him and see if he can solve it.

Of course out of warranty.

Here's another question:

-If the screen WAS dead and was the culprit, would the radio still function, music/bluetooth clalling, ejecting a disc...etc?

agmsuv:

That helps. So far I've had no luck in finding a repair place online that deals with these units. Especially this 2012 nav ******* child that was pre-Intellilink and handled many of the PCIM features internally.

There might be a way to do a hard reset on the system. I had a few problems with my "color touch radio" that were solved by a software update and reset. Might be wishful thinking, but perhaps it is worth and least discussing this problem with the dealer. Also, did any of those issues you mentioned happen to the unit while it was still under warranty? If so and you documented them with the dealer, you may still be able to get the warranty to cover the replacement.

No problems until just out of warranty (classic).

I pulled the battery for awhile and then reinstalled everything. Still black screen that has a hint of a flicker every time the speakers try to power up. OnStar button just blinks green a few times before going off.

BTW, apparently you need the radio to power your chimes and turn signal noises.....etc. Those all go out when one of these dies.

Found a UEW radio at an online wrecking yard. Different part number that only seems to source to a Malibu, but its got the big UEW tag on it and all the plugs are the same color and are in the same spot. For a 20% restocking fee if it doesn't work, I took a shot. When I get it I'll install, take to dealer to see if they can program, and then update this thread with my findings for future search researchers.

Now that you'd found a radio maybe your ulcer won't act up anymore.

Sorry to hear that this happened just out of warranty. And in spite of unnecessary editorial comments from another member about "preaching" I wasn't intending to do so. It is just folks come here and many do not realize that they have a warranty. So glad you clarified that and now we can all possibly help. BTW. . .. 30 year GM vet here also.

I don't know how long you disconnected the battery, but after disconnecting shorting the cable leads together for a few seconds and then leaving it for 20 minutes or so sometimes works better. It bleeds off the memory caps in each module.

Since you found a radio there still may be other issues if it won't program.
There is a possibility that it may not be the radio, but another module in the vehicle network that has caused or contributed to this. The VCIM is one such module but that may be a long shot. A Tech2 scan of the vehicle might be worth looking into if you can connect with someone that has one. As others have pointed out, the radio has other functions such as links with the Onstar module. But the Communications Module is key to all the others.

Here is a link that explains both the evolution of the GM Lan and modules as well as pertinent info regarding ODBII technology.
While not the most current it may help both now and in future problems.

Re: 2012 UEW Nav radio dead. Looking for options and info.

Update:

Installed UEW radio out of a 2013 Malibu. Chimes back on, back up cam back in action, identity crisis bowtie screen then theft lock up. Next stop is the dealer to see if they can sync it to my VIN. If they can't, my other recourse is sending it out to an aftermarket unlocker that can probably reset the VIN lock and also unlock "change settings while moving" type stuff.

It's a little un-nerving that if your radio goes dead you lose ALL chimes/turn signals/warning sounds and back up cam. I can understand the cam part, but GM needs to make chimes/warnings a BCM or cluster function. Chalk it up to a safety issue there.
