2012 Mylink Failure?

OK - I get that things go awry at times, especially where electronics are concerned. I have a '12 Equinox LT with the Mylink, purchased in May 2012. Last week it started the intermittent operation, and within about two days, quite working altogether. The HVAC controls still work, but without seeing temperature and status of system itself, is very frustrating. The only thing on the audio that worked was the last XM station it was on when it fizzled out, and the screen goes through several "re-boots" and states of various dysfunctional operation. Took it to the local GM dealer for diagnostics and learned that the unit failed and a replacement is $1600! Unfortunately, in miles I'm way over in warranty, but in time I've got about 6 months left. I get the warranty game, but it seems to me that the mileage should have nothing to do with the longevity of the radio unit.

I have 6 GM cars, including this one, and while this is a relatively small issue among the Corvettes, Camaros and Truck I own (and have owned), it is still extremely irritating.

Thanks for letting me vent, and if anyone has information that may help with a warranty claim, I'm all ears.

Personally, i would think that mileage would be more related to a radio breaking, than time. Unless you tend to run your radio in your garage while you are not driving it.

Either way, possibly someone from GM Customer Service that monitors this forum may chime in with some help, but I would guess that you are most likely going to have to pay the piper to get it fixed.

They might work with you if you approach them nicely about the warranty. I mean they might cut you a discount, not a full warranty service. You are definitely out of warranty, so they have no obligation to do anything. You can actually call the GM customer service number in the manual and talk to them directly. 2 years is a pretty short time, but millage is a better indicator for how long the radio has been used. If you are polite about it, you might get them to split the cost, or at least do the labor free.

Before you do drop that much money on a new radio, I'd try just pulling the radio fuse. You may very well lose the last radio station you were listening to if this doesn't work. The radio/console is a computer, and they are fickle things. I've solved a lot of "ghosts" in computers through similar techniques. It is a risk though. In this case it's the heart of your radio and HVAC. If it dies completely, you could lose a lot from it.

Thanks for the information. I'm going to call customer service this morning. However, I disagree on the time/mileage issue. If the powertrain is warranted to 5 years/100k miles, the radio should not die at 30 months and 62k miles. I surmise that's why warranties are written the way they are though...

Care to explain your thinking ? Myself, I don't see how the radio and the power train are related.

SSMPSTR logging in under another name here on another computer.

I wasn't suggesting that they are related per se, but only that the warranty states that things that take the biggest abuse are warranted longer.

If you consider that the car has ~62k miles, average speed per DIC is 42 MPH and the radio is on during this time, that's 1476 hours of operation or 61.5 days of total continuous operation (whether or not parked in my garage running 24 hours a day as previously mentioned). I'm not aware of a stipulation that limits continuous use of the radio in my Owner's manual. Assuming I put no mileage on the car (again, parked in my garage while I enjoy the Mylink system), the stated warranty covers the radio/Mylink for 36 months (1,068 days, or 25,632 continuous hours), period. My point is that the mileage is irrelevant to the wear on the radio. Warranty stipulations are a numbers game based on statistical odds of failure- those numbers work both ways. Will the rationale work? Not sure

That really sucks. I would take it up directly with GM and hopefully they will knock the price down on a replacement.

I called GM and they have been incredibly responsive so far. I'm confident we will achieve successful resolution to this matter.

Please report back on what resolution (if any) you get from GM. I'm sure you won't be the only one in this boat as these headunits age.

Paid a $100 deductible and GM/local dealer replaced it as a good-faith warranty item. I could not be happier with the service and professionalism of GM Customer Care and the original selling dealer. I'm back on the road in my Chevrolet, enjoying the vehicle again.
