Angry 2012 Equinox Excessive Oil Consumption

I am currently going thru an oil consumption test with my dealer. In 1200 miles I have gone thru 2 quarts of oil!

I do not know where this will lead once I am done with the entire test, but to say the least I am very unhappy. My equinox only has 107,000 miles.

I am wondering how many people have had their car repaired by GM due to excessive oil consumption. Did the problem go away?

Thanks in advance.

If you've gone thru 2 quarts in 1200 miles I'm surprised they haven't conceded that it's "using oil" beyond the parameters and that they need to press ahead with the next step. In my opinion, to not press ahead now is just wasting time and procrastinating the inevitable.

Is a 2012 still eligible? My coverage ran out last year. And then it started gulping oil. Seriously, 0.5 qt every 3000 miles to about 1 qt per 1000 miles.

It is not covered by the special coverage for this issue anymore. Just out by about 4 months. My dealer says lets go thru the motions of going thru the consumption test and submit it and see what GM says. He says its a gamble that he has seen pay off a few times.

We'll see what happens.

Good luck. Stranger things have happened in the warranty application process.

my 2012 failed the test, so they replaced the pistons and a bunch of other things at the same time, it made a world of difference.

I complained, bitched, moaned, screamed and begged for years before they finally conceded. Absolutely miserable experience. Never a GM product for me again, not because of the problem, but because of how they handled it.

GM customer service is abysmal. It typically isn't at the local level--although in some cases they attempt to distance themselves and hide behind the corporate "boiler-plate statements". It is a systemic problem at the corporate level of GM and Chevrolet--the only areas that I have personal experience. Until they are receptive to customer issues and seek to resolve, they will continue to get hammered by the public.

Off-topic, in a way; let me share a customer service experience I just had with Samsung.

I purchased a Samsung QLED TV end-April last year. Two weeks ago we noticed a black line, top-to-bottom, through the screen. Called Samsung Customer Service and after discussing with the CS Rep, he stated that the TV was 2 months out of warranty; I stated it wasn't worth it to me to pay for the repair. He then responded, saying "Let me speak with my supervisor/manager." He came back stating that they would extend the warranty and open a service case, which he did--providing case number and phone number to the service center, while stating that the service center would call to set up an appointment. Less than 30 minutes later, the service center called me and set up the appointment for two days later. I didn't know what to expect in the way of repair, but they told me the TV had to be down off the wall--which I did. Technician arrived with a new screen, disassembled the TV and removed computer cards and sound components, attached components to new screen--and even helped me put TV back on wall! Total time: Less than 30 minutes and no cost to me. Three days total from my first call to Samsung. I didn't have to ask anything about considering an extension of warranty--they arrived at that solution on their own. That's what customer service is supposed to be!

That is amazing. And to the OP, good luck with the oil burner. Keep us posted. I did read something about the class action suit against GM on this.
