thoughts on purchase

Looking at a Pontiac g6 hardtop convertible .
Vehicle is in great shape except it has 143000 miles on the 3.9l v6 I'm figuring if it had gasket problems as a lot of them did, it should have been fixed by now another problem with these vehicles was rotors and brakes. Plan on only driving it once in awhile store in winter Vehicle is located far from where I'm located so I don't want to have to go back and forth.
Thoughts?

Re: thoughts on purchase

Sounds like fun (for about $8k - $10k, I'm guessing?). I've never owned a convertible, but if I did it would be a hardtop convertible like the one you're considering. I'd be afraid of vandalism with the ragtop, and the "fixed" hardtops (like my sister-in-law's red Mercedes she used to have) are a pain in the back. A friend built a storage box off her garage ceiling and I used to help him lift it off and then up into the box. Boy was that a nuisance!

But getting back to your G6 - that mileage wouldn't scare me away, but I'd like to rigorously check out the mechanicals to gauge overall health.

How are you going to be able to do that if the vehicle is "far from where [you're] located"?

Myself, i would go for the Toyota Solara Convertible over the G6. Different top, but probably more reliable, and the ragtop doesn't bother me. I don't usually park where it would come into play. Plus, I talked to a G6 owner, and his comment was that they were prone to rattles - which i don't like at all. Just my $0.02 But either is probably a much better choice than the Chrysler 200.

Re: thoughts on purchase

I already have a 92 sunbird convertible that I purchased new. Now it only has 50000 miles on it never in the snow. Like the looks of the g6 and they didn't make too many of the 3.9l so I'm told Vehicle is about 2 hours from me so really not that far away I guess. Thanks for the feedback
I still get a pension check from GM so I would never think about a Toyota

I'll never forget driving around Philly in the late 80's in a brand new Mustang convertible. What a racket that thing made! Sounded like it was coming apart as we hit every bump in the road. I would think the ragtops would be noisier that the hardtop convertibles because the linkage is flimsier and there's less insulation of outside noise.

And as for vandalism, take it to a theatre, a restaurant, wherever ... Always susceptible to damage by people passing by it. Friend had a late 80's model maroon convertible ragtop Mustang (still has it but tranny is shot). Someone once stabbed a hole in the roof with a knife. Just too easy for morons to vandalize.

Pontiac had problems with the g6 for rattles. Top was Mfg by an outside supplier GM even bought back some vehicles stopped producing them and revised the top don't know yet if the vehicle I'm interested in has the revised top or not weather keeping me from going to look
