XT4 vs Denali vs Terrain 1.5

So there is some progress with GM on the transmission issues on my Terrain 1.5 that has me shopping again. Iím leaning towards a 1.6TD Premier Equinox as a replacement but wanted to drive some others before being final about it. I drove each car back to back over the same loop and reset the mileage at the same place to get an mpg comparison.

Denali - the 2.0 is more linear feeling power wise than my 1.5 and of course has no issues using 9th gear. I however did notice that it hunted in and out of 9th gear more than my 1.5 will when I force it into 9th. Maybe the tq range is a little higher. The Denali was a little quiter inside and ride may e a smidge better than my SLE. I however donít feel itís enough nicer than an SLT so I will be passing on the Denali. Averaged 22mpg over the loop.

XT4 - obviously love the looks better and the interior is vastly better. I do however prefer the seats in the Terrain. Though they are harder they hug my sides better. The leather feels cheaper in the XT4 than in the Denali. While I doubt itís any faster the throttle mapping and transmission tuning are more aggressive than the Denali making it feel sportier the steering is quicker but lighter and more vague. The brake pedal is spongy compared to the Terrain and while it may be limited to just this particular car the AC wasnít cutting it. The ride was soft but noticeably more busy due to the shorter wheelbase. Going with the XT4 would mean skipping a few options I would otherwise splurge on the GM Twins and I didnít like it better or worse than the Terrain. While I live the looks I think Iíll pass. 24.3 mpg

My Terrain 1.5. Already summed up my experience with it but Iíll say again the power is more of a light switch in mine that has a huge surge around 1500 but falls flat at 2500. The trade off is 29.5 mpg. Granted mine has 18k miles so being broken in certainly helps.

Equinox 1.6td - I didnít drive this back to back on the same loop so I canít comment on MPG. I will say in the premier trim I like the Equinox interior better than the Terrain. In lessor trims I like the Terrain better which is why I got mine. I definitely like the exterior of the Terrain better in any trim. While I have gotten used to the push button transmission I must say it was nice getting a shifter again. Side note, the shifter in the XT4 really sucks! I wouldnít mind the push buttons as much if it actual was better packaged. As it is you actually have more storage space in the center counsel area in the Equinox. I like the old school transmission. Itís not as quick or smooth but with the diesel it hardly has to shift at all so itís not as busy. Idk if the brakes are different compared to my Terrain but they are the most natural and progressive of the bunch. I also think the heavier Diesel engine and relatively smaller wheels on the Equinox give it a better ride.

Ultimately I think Iím going with a Black Equinox Premier with the two tone black and brandy interior, AWD with the preferred package. I wanted a dark gray one but there arenít any in the country with the interior I wanted. I placed an order about 3 weeks ago but got a phone call yesterday informing they couldnít complete the order due to canceling the engine. It was a close match between that and an SLT Terrain diesel but ultimately I liked the wheels on the Equinox better, the shifter, and the fact that it gets cooled seats for about the same price as an SLT that doesnít even offer them.
tizan likes this.

The wife and I just got our 2019 Terrain Denali a few weeks ago and are very happy with the rig. She could have had anything she wanted and yet chose the Terrain over all of the others with the only other one higher on the list was the Range Rover Velar. Ultimately, the 4 month wait and $40,000 price tag difference were the deciding points between the Terrain and Velar.

We tested a lot of vehicles and her primary item was the ride comfort. While other SUV's had parts that were better than the Terrain, the total package is what really mattered. Again, the Range Rover Velar was superior, but at that price tag it should be. The Caddy XT5 is also very nice and I considered it to be better than the XT4 in comfort and the way it handled. The Blazer was nice, just not as refined as we expected when looking at the Premier models.

Vehicles tested:
Audi: Q5, Q7
BMW: X3, X4, X5
Buick: Envision, Enclave
Caddy: XT4, XT5
Chevy: Blazer, Traverse - Both Premiers
GMC: Terrain, Traverse, Acadia - All Denali
Range Rover: Evoque-20, Discovery and Velar

We briefly looked Mazda and Subaru and they didn't meet the luxury classification.

I really like the Mazda and would probably go that direction but I have to stick with a GM vehicle. Not a huge fan of the XT5's looks and you have to get higher trims to get a decent interior. I love the interior of the Envision but it's outside is so dated and bland. Not interested in the Blazer at all. It only looks good in the RS trim and you can only get a black interior in that trim which I will not do. The Traverse/Acadia are both bigger than I would like and I don't like the 2.5 or V6 engines. I know they offer the 2.0T in some trims but I would rather get a smaller fully loaded car for less money.

I would chose the Denali if it had the diesel option. I much prefer the looks of the Terrain to the Equinox but for the same money the Equinox gets cooled seats in the premiere trim where the Terrain only offers them in the Denali trim.
