2010 Equinox, ABS issue w/stabilitrack light activating and no awd message

When starting out in my 2010 Chevy Equinox LS with AWD, the abs activates when I first apply the brakes, then the abs light comes on, the message center says stabilitrak needs servicing and a message stating awd has been turned off. When I connect the scan tool it reads C0040, right front speed sensor circuit malfunction. I replaced the wheel speed sensor and pigtail connector which did not stop the problem. The ABS relay is ok too. Is replacing the bearing my only thing left to do

Re: 2010 Equinox, ABS issue w/stabilitrack light activating and no awd message

if you replaced the wheel sensor did you check to see if it is clear to the drive shaft?
the drive axle will have what looks like a gear on it.....the sensor need to be right at that gear.....there could be a piece of metal or something blocking the signal.

replacing the wheel bearing wont help because the gear is on the drive axle

also that code should have a couple numbers after it...

C0040 OF is the signal is eratic

C0040 18 is low signal

if you take the sensor back out and look down in the hole you will see the gear I am talking about.

was the sensor the same length ?

is the connector snapped together good and no pins backed themselves out?

look at picture the gear is the thing with teeth on it.....

its not really a gear just a sensor but when the teeth pass past the sensor it generates a signal.

the red and black circle is where the gear is and that sensor should be real close to it at some point

Re: 2010 Equinox, ABS issue w/stabilitrack light activating and no awd message

Just had this happen on my '11 Terrain, brake pedal pulsing at low speed, and when the vehicle reaches 15-20mph, the ABS Light, Stabilitrak Light illuminate and I get the messages "Service Stabilitrak", "AWD Disabled" messages in the display. The codes I have though are C0040-06 (Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit-Low Voltage/Open), and C0040-5A (Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit-Not Plausible). Replaced the right front ABS Sensor, cleared ABS codes, and they came back after the test drive. Seems like these Theta platforms might have some wiring problems? Already cleaned the connector for that sensor, no change. Gonna go trace that wire and look for loose/broken wires or connectors. Had to buy a new scanner to check these codes, went to autozone and bought an Innova 3040C scanner. So I cant be sure if these specific codes are scanner specific or OBD/GMC specific. Just thought I'd clarify that.

Re: 2010 Equinox, ABS issue w/stabilitrack light activating and no awd message

the two codes I listed above are right from the 2010 gm service manual but it only list the two I said for c0040......maybe the 2011 kicks out a different code.

my manuals say equinox/terrain 2010

the stabiltrak / no awd / and abs all use the sensors to determine if the wheels are moving and at what speed.

if you put the donut spare tire on there it will disable awd because the smaller tire is turning faster.

Re: 2010 Equinox, ABS issue w/stabilitrack light activating and no awd message

THank you all for your suggestions and assistance. This is what I ended up having to do to rectify the problem. The encoder ring on the 2010 Equinox is not on the driveshaft, but on the inside of the wheel hub.

After removing the rotor, I was able to look into a small gap at the rear of the hub. Mine was not only very dirty like the image, but the ring itself was broken and half of it was missing. This is what was causing the C0040 code, the wheel speed sensor wasn't getting a good signal. Being that Chevrolet is so forward thinking in their engineering, the encoder ring is permanently affixed to the rear of the hub assembly. Therefore, I had to replace the entire hub rather than just the encoder ring!

I hope this helps anyone with a 2010 with the same issue. Have fun getting the wheel hub assembly off, however there are many helpful videos on YouTube that proved helpful. I found the air chisel to work best.

You will find that many, if not most, car makers have and integral encoder ring.

Image? What image? You are loading pictures that are TOO big to display. Need to downsize them about 75% less in size and they are a chain of never ending pictures of a whole manual it appears.

You also need to select "ADDITiONAL" when adding images. You must be loading other images on top of previous one.

Not sure how it could get "broken" or "part of it missing" if it was all one part with the hub?

The drawing doesn't really show that.

The ring is affixed to the rear of the wheel hub. It is not part of the hub, just attached to the rear. I assure you, half of it was missing.

Sorry the image doesn't appear, just new here. Did I fix it correctly

Yes, pictures showing now, although the second one is very small so can not see much detail.

Yes, I realize the encoder ring is "affixed". What I mean by an integral part of the hub is that it can NOT be replaced for repair. Ergo. . . it is part of the integrated hub assembly just as the bearing is affixed to the hub, but can not be replaced for repair . . . unless a person gets creative I suppose.

Can't imagine how just part of it somehow broke off back there, unless at some time in the past someone had banged on it and cracked it?
