2017 Equinox - 6 cyl, AWD, Premier - Gas smell coming from exhaust

Greetings,

First time poster to this forum and really hoping someone can help me out with a problem.

My wife and I purchased a brand new 2017 Equinox back in January. Shortly after we took delivery of it, we began noticing a strong smell of gas (e.g. fuel) on occasion coming from the vehicle. On all occurrences, the vehicle has been in the garage over night and has occurred when we started it to warm up. We live in Minnesota, so it's been relatively cold. This problem does not happen all of the time.

Summary of occurrences:
1. Vehicle has been in the garage overnight each time
2. Start vehicle to warm up while still in the garage. Garage door is open
3. Come out to garage and there is a very strong smell of gas
4. Have never noticed any sign of a fuel leak...no residue on the floor of the garage
5. The first time this happened, we had filled the tank the night before. We let the pump shut off by itself as to not over fill
6. The next 3 occurrences occurred when the tank was 50% or less full
7. During the last occurrence, I smelled the exhaust coming out of the exhaust pipe in the rear of the vehicle and smelled gas (e.g. fuel)...this is the possible location. Did not check the exhaust on the previous occurrences
8. The gas smell is not noticeable inside the vehicle with the doors shut...doesn't appear to come through the ventilation system

We've had the vehicle into the dealership twice now for an extended duration and they haven't been able to find the source of the problem. The first time in, the mechanic smelled the gas when he started it to pull it into the garage but the problem went away while they had it and they couldn't find the source. The second time in, they could reproduce the problem after having it for 4-5 days. They simply instructed us to bring it back in the next time it happens...however, I'm not confident at all that they will find the source unless it's actually occurring at the dealership.

As you can imagine, we're extremely frustrated as the vehicle now has just over 1000 miles on it. We love the vehicle...just not this issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

- Mike

Puzzling. . but I can say this. The V6 is designed with a "fast Converter" light off upon a cold start. In simple terms, the engine control unit fires the fuel injectors extra rich for the first 1 minute or so upon a Cold Start. Even then, as it idles, it takes awhile for the engine and emission system to burn off the "warm up" fuel.

I have a 2015 and notice this as well.

Now, does it smell like that after it is warmed up... say, after a short stop at a store and then started again?

If so, then there may be a problem.

But the strong odor on a Cold Start is pretty normal. They want to warm the Catalytic Converters up quickly to start processing emissions more quickly. I know. . . seems a contradiction. . . add more fuel to burn cleaner ?? ?

Greetings, thanks a ton for your response. Yes, the smell does go away after it's warmed up (e.g. after driving it to the first destination)...short or long trip. Only seems to occur on start when engine is completely cold.

As a precaution, keep an eye on your oil level to make sure the fuel pump is not dumping extra gas into the oil which would raise the oil level. Most likely it is not but I had a 2014 2.4 that did. I do not recall the 3.6 having the same issue but be safe. I have never smelled excess gas from my 2016 V6 but my sense of smell is not worth a darn. I love my 3.6 V6 in my Equinox, and the all new 3.6 in my 2017 Colorado that I just picked up. You will too

I agree with JayT. My Equinox is the same. Strong odor when first started. All part of the warmup programing of the vehicle.

You are very welcome.

Good point by Chevy05 though. . check your oil level every few days and see if is rises, seems watery when cold, or even if gas mileage seems to be going down.

When your engine is cold or warming up the Engine Control Module is in open loop.
This means your ECM ignores the Oxygen Sensors and runs on a pre-determined program.

When you reach operating temp, the O2 sensors take over, meter the fuel, and you are in closed loop.
The faster you can get into closed loop, the more efficient your engine will run and less emissions.
As JayT posted, the 3.6L V-6 actually double fires the injectors at start up.

A rich condition on cold start is normal.
I have not noticed the strong odor in my 2014 but then I live in the warm southwest.

Well. . . . I guess you are directing that to the OP. . .

I kind of know that about the open loop and double injection firing, but was keeping it simple for the OP. ..

I worked at the main plant of Delco Electronics for 17 years where we developed and made most of GMs ECMs and in house test and verification systems. The history of the plant was long, rich, and filled with adventures including designing and making the redundant computer systems for the Apollo space shots and lunar landing modules.

I smell gas sometimes too when I start up, but then it goes away.
