2011 Equinox Rough Starts and Hesitation

I just picked up a 2011 Equinox LT AWD with 79K from a dealership. I have been noticing that when I start the vehicle for the first time and when it is cold out, it starts a little rough and RPMs seem it idle a little high between 1.25-1.5. When i put the car in gear the RPMs seem to even out around 1, but then when I touch the gas to get going after waiting a couple seconds it seems to slip or hesitate before getting power. This weekend while I was on the gas accelerating through a left turn there was definite engine/transmission hesitation, which felt like a gear shift slip or engine misfire (felt like I had the break and gas pressed down at the same time). The dealership wants me to take it in overnight so they can try to replicate the rough start and hesitation when put in gear from a cold morning start. Anyone here have a similar experience or educated guesses on what the issue may be?

If it is the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine ask for the service history.

2.4L I4 engines form 2010 to 2013 have had Cam Shaft Actuators, High Pressure fuel pump leaking fuel into the engine ( high oil consumption ), and other engine issues.

Would have been good to look here before buying and do some research.

You can use the search box on the uper right to find 2.4L engine issues.

Hope yours has been properly service and has all the factory warranty repairs completed.

Can you return the vehicle?

Talks for the advice, i will ask about the engine service history report when I bring it in. I did check the recalls for my VIN and didn't come up with anything. Since I am inside of 90 days I do have the recourse to return the vehicle but that would only be if the dealer can't repair and value has been diminished. Other than the rough start and hesitation when going into gear the car has been driving well. I just want to get the issue diagnosed/fixed while it is inside of the lemon law warranty.

Definitely look at your throttle body. First bet is that is very dirty. It is the easiest and most likely culprit to find and fix.

Re: 2011 Equinox Rough Starts and Hesitation

Hopefully it is just a simple as a Camshaft actuator as JayT pointed out as a possible cause.

However, the issues with the 2.4L are very well documented. Knock on wood, my 2012 2.4L seems fine at the 60k mile mark.

If you plan to keep the vehicle, I would highly suggest looking into some kind of extended warranty on the powertrain. If you can't get one, dump the vehicle and get a V6 or a newer 2.4L (2014 and up).

Re: 2011 Equinox Rough Starts and Hesitation

Thanks all... I will let you know what they tell me at the dealership...Planning to take it in on Thursday to leave overnight, so they can start it cold on Friday and hopefully replicate the problem. I am getting no codes or errors, and the lurching/hesitation is only happening every once and awhile, so I am hoping the dealer can notice it and figure out what the issue may be. Although the rough idle seem to happen every time I start cold and then RMPs even out after about 10 seconds.

Just in case...by chance...they happen to tell you that "they all do that", tell them BS, because they don't and your car has issues which you should demand to have them fixed to YOUR satisfaction. Even though it may only happen once in awhile, it is once too much if your are in a busy intersection and get injured in an accident because of it.

Just a heads up, and my $0.02. I have one and mine DOES NOT do what you have described.

Re: 2011 Equinox Rough Starts and Hesitation

Dealership couldn't find anything actually wrong and no codes to speak of. Recommended throttle body cleaning. Seemed to correct rough start/idle issue which has not happened since the cleaning. Happy about that, but gas mileage seems to be low @ ~20mpg. Can't put my finger on anything specific to have checked out, so fingers crossed....

I can put a finger on it.
Borrow a boroscope from AutoZone. Just have to leave a deposit.
Pull the spark plugs and look down into the cylinder with the boroscope.
(They have great boroscopes for cheap on Amazon that works with your smartphone)
Bet you see nothing but black carbon.

I am contemplating a piston soak with GM top engine cleaner or Mopar CCC

This engine is VERY easy to work on. You can do most of the maintenance and work yourself and save a bunch of money. Lots of videos out there on YouTube to help you and you will get to know your car.
