05 Equinox PTU & RDM Gear Oil Change

I have an 05 Equinox AWD with 155k on it and just changed the PTU (transfer case) and rear differential (RDM) oil. Manual does not require a change at any miles, but decided to. I used AC Delco Versatrak, which is required for this year. I purchased at a local auto parts store which was cheaper than amazon and much cheaper than a dealer. I paid $20 for a 16.9 oz bottle. The PTU was very dirty and had alot of particles on the magnet drain plug. The differential was much cleaner and not many particles on the magnet. I purchased the car at 40k, so I assume this was the original oil. The transfer case used a 17mm hex head, so make sure you have that, it is a big hex socket. The ptu took about 14 oz and the rear differential took about 25 oz. I used a small pump that attaches to the bottle (plews quart pump atamazon for about $6). Ensure the car was driven and hot so the oil drains properly. I did drive in circles before and after changing the differential to keep the oil mixed and at the right level when checking. I hope this helps anyone trying this. Before I did it I was trying to find the amount of fluid that it takes. The shop manual and the web forums have the differential amounts, but I never could find the ptu capacity. Now we know- about 14 oz, but fill it till it starts coming out, just ensure you purchase enough bottles for both- 3 bottles total.

nice list very accurate except the differential, the GM shop manual stated 25.4 oz, I measured what I removed and put in, it was about 25, so the 17 oz listed in the list is wrong, everything else in your list look correct.

Re: 05 Equinox PTU & RDM Gear Oil Change

just a few other helpful hints- the drain for the differential is in the very front of the housing, where the driveshaft comes in, all drains and fill ports for both use metric hex sockets, but the transfer case fill port is a 13 mm head bolt. So be sure to have a metrix hex socket set. I bought a set from harbor freight. I have worked on cars a long time and never had the set,but just used it a bunch of times. Probably goes into the category of having a better brand- craftsman, snap on, etc, but for the low use, for now the harbor freight Pittsburgh will work. Also ensure to take the fill port off first, because if you drain it and for any reason the fill plug does not come out, you are in trouble.
